Musical Taste Poll

Post by breedlovejumbo »

I read something a while back, and I wanted to see if it is somewhat true. When a respectable sample size is achieved, we'll find out the answer.

If you voted on Gaelic Crossings, you can vote here too.
But I will sit and hearken, and be glad that through you great beauty has been wakened into song.

Jeeesh! Only four choices. In the age of diversity, or is it the age of asphargus, I can't see the use of such a simple poll with just one box to click on.

What made you pick Elvis and/or the Beatles for a poll. Is there a hidden agenda in asking such simplicity in a complex world.

There is always a hidden agenda; however, mine is merely curiosity.

Elvis ruled, but I don't think his work has held up well with the passage of time. The Beatles were the most overrated band in the history of music. That leaves, uh, neither.

I suppose it might make me terribly un-cool, but I like the Beatles. It may, however, be due to the fact that my mother sang me Beatles songs as lullabies when I little.

I had to say neither. After all, rock music ended when Buddy Holly died. I didn't like Elvis when he first came on the scene and my opinion never changed. The Beetles were OK and did write some good music but after Buddy nothing was that good. I switched to Bluegrass and folk.

I guess it means that I'm a rock snob with little tolerance for pop.

Really, I think the Beatles are given an awful lot of credit for having been innovators when in fact much of what they supposedly innovated had been done before (and in most cases done better) by less popular artists.

The Beatles greatest innovations were not in the realm of music, but in the marketing, management and financial areas.

I will give the Beatles this innovation: Rubber Soul was probably the first pop album with no filler. It remains my favorite Beatles album.

"Phoney Beatle-Mania has bitten the dust" The Clash

It's not that I don't like the occasional Beatles song but as a child their music was jammed down my throat on a nonstop basis. Why go home & put on a Beatles album when I can listen to it while on hold with the telephone co. or while riding in an elevator. A song is only good til the 10,000,000,000,000,000th time, then it's just reduced to sonic wallpaper.

Funny to think that Beatles royalties now fund Michael Jackson's "Neverland".

Beatles - Overated?

Post by bittafchiff »

To get a proper handle on Elvis and The Beatles contribution to rock music I really believe you had to be there! Even studying the history of rock wouldn't give you a true perspective. Elvis was amazing! True he recorded a load of rubbish, but on form he was teffific. The Beatles? I was never a fan of The Beatles, but they were a class act. Of course the American perspective of The Beatles is very different than the British experience. Here they happened in a slow organic way - no big hype! In America they needed the big push! Who was going to give a British rock band any air-time without it!

I love the Clash. By the way, though, Paul McCartney bought back the part of the Beatles' catalog that MJ owned.
