Newer recordings in the Sliabh Luachra style?

Post by ertwert »

Hi, can someone recommend me newer recordings with lots of polkas and slides?
To be honest...I can't listen so much to old recordings of the 60th and 70th, the audio quality just isn't my taste.
I am especially interested in recordings that are contain quiet a lot different musical instruments (hopefully flute, fiddle, box, concertina, pipes, etc.) and are not just played on box and/or fiddle.

Thanks :)

Box and pipes: Wind and reeds by Paudie o'Connor and John o'Brien.

Box and fiddle:

And this youtube channel (Handed Down Scartaglen) is a goldmine:

My personal favourite is The Cats Rambles by Michael Sheehy. But thats solo piano accordion, so might not be what you are looking for.

Tell us something.: I'm an accordion player, I love playing Irish music. I also run a shop called Mudchutney selling folk music themed clothing, go take a look, I think it's brilliant! I'm registering because I love all things folky and music related so want to share the love, and read more and more about this kind of stuff. Is that enough? Feels weird writing like this...kind of like trying to be a real person, which obviously I am, but you don't know that.

Many thanks for bringing that recording to our attention, Kevin. Bought it on the spot, and look forward to hearing it tomorrow.

You should listen to Colm Guilfoyle (flute) and Brian O'Leary's (Box) duet.

The Denis Murphy one I suppose, it is lovely. Aine and Francis O'C. were in town launching the CD, during the concertina cruinniu, can't for the life of me think why I didn't go, the weather, probably.

FWIW, Kenny posted this some time ago:
I can't ever think of a better duet on 2 tin whistles. The Kerry 6-part version of "Kiss The Maid Behind The Barrel" [ which really should be played more ] - played by Co. Kerry musicians Nicky and Anne McAuliffe - 1976 :

Hope the lockdown is treating you well John. Time to learn the big tunes, or new versions of them.

All ok here Peter. 4 of us here in the house on lock down. If they annoy me I will just play a few of my archive piping tapes. Soon sort them out. :D I have a couple of different recordings of the 6-parter. I will have to dig out the best one.

Hope you are keeping safe.

Keep well

John
