CURRENT FAVORITE MUSIC

Post by pthouron »

Thought I'd list the CDs that are currently spinning in my player. If someone wants to add theirs to the thread, it'll make an interesting reference for everybody else. All include whistle (except where noted), either as a primary instrument or as an accompaniment:

Band/Artist**********************Title

FLOOK "Rubai"

FLOOK "Flatfish"

Gordon Duncan "Thunderstruck" (pipes, includes an insane version of AC/CD's "Thunderstruck" on Highland Pipes)

Christina Harrison "Lassie Wi' The Lint-White Locks" (singer)

Rod Paterson "Up To Date" (singer)

Rod Paterson "Songs From The Bottom Drawer" (sings Robert Burns)

Tony McManus "Tony McManus" (guitar)

Tony McManus "Pourquoi Quebec?"

Tony McManus "Ceol More"

Bagad Kemper "Azeliz Iza" (crazy band from Brittany)

Tony Cuffe "Sae Will We Yet" (singer)

J.M.Veillon/Y.Riou "PontGwenn ha Pont Stang" (Flute/Guitar)

J.M.Veillon/Y.Riou "Beo!"
(Thanks for the recommendation Zoob!!! :) )

C.Breatnach/M/Dunlea "Music for Whistle and Guitar"

El McMeen "The Lea Rig"

W.Jackson/McKenzie "Notes from a Hebridean Island" (great record!)

All are available from either of these sites:
http://www.tayberry.com
http://musicscotland.com
except El McMeen available at http://www.elmcmeen.com

Happy Listening

Well, I've not been listening to a lot of things with whistles lately.

Eliza Carthy - Red Rice

O Jerusalem - composed by Hildegard von Bingen - performed by Sequentia

The World's Room - Old Blind Dogs
(has whistles!)
Catch from the board of beauty
Such careless crumbs as fall.
- Edna St. Vincent Millay

I picked up Kate Rusby's "Hourglass" a few weeks ago. I love this album. Irish/english tales, some happy, some mournful. I love to find those songs that make me cry . . . I'm not sentimental at all, but there's something in her delivery that makes some of these tracks so darn sad. Favorites: "Annan Waters", "A Rose in April", "I am Stretched Out on your Grave", and "Old Man Time", the latter being her composition. Tony McManus plays on two of the songs.
I sing the birdie tune
It makes the birdies swoon
It sends them to the moon
Just like a big balloon

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
Cherish The Ladies - One and All
Eileen Ivers - Immigrant Soul

I'm with Lily and Soin -- Red Rice is one of my all-time favorite records. How Liza switches from the straightforward trad to the twisted stuff is remarkable.

Current faves: All 3 Deanta albums, all 4 by Connie Dover, the Glute Geezers (from Rich's website), and a few Yes albums from the classic lineup, especially Close to the Edge. And, just in, the Renaissance BBC sessions.

Always in my mind are most of Steeleye Span, Planxty, Renaissance, a lot of Romantic trios (Brahms, Dvorak, Ravel), Beethoven symphonies. There's just so much good music out there that it's difficult sometimes to listen to my own tooting.

I can't say that I've been listening to a lot of whistle music lately. I've been playing a lot though.

I'm really stuck on Jesse Cook. Robbie Robertson is a runner up and then the Chieftans, a bit of Flook thrown in there as well. And Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong.....

I'm a MESS!!!

Me too! Probably because I saw them in concert only a few weeks ago :D , bought both CDs on the spot, and love Sarah Alla's Staccato pops and Brian Finnigan's triple-tonguing. My fave track is 'Pressed for Time'.

I'm also listening to TPTestcard a lot, and I'm loving a track 'Paddy's Paradise' from Phil Hardy's 1st Album.

Tell us something.: I've been playing whistle for a very long time, but never seem to get any better than I was about 10 years ago. I'm okay with that. :)

Here's what I've got playing at work most days:

Sharon Shannon: Sharon Shannon (button accordion)
Jackie Daly: Music from Sliabh Luachra (button accordion, concertina)
Dermot Byrne: Dermot Byrne (button accordion, melodeon)
John O'Halloran: But Why Johnny? (melodeon)

John Skelton: A Few Tunes (whistle and flute)

Kevin Crehan: Music from West Clare (fiddle)
Grey Larsen: The Green House

I saw Kevin and Grey in concert a couple of weeks ago...great show.
They even played a whistle duet!

I've also been listening to Dervish and Sharon Shannon. Also Bothy Band, some Chieftains and a Newfoundland band called The Navigators. Dervish is coming to the midwest in October! Woo hoo!
