I'd say Go for it. No-one knows how long old Alhaji Mustafa Ahammed's gold will be kept a secret. :)

Just today I received three a "Phillip Ugoma." Typically I just delete them when I get them, but it there a more effective way to deal with it- to try and lessen these things from happening?

Well, it's a new record for me... 338 e-mail messages today. Only 10 or so were from friends/subscribed sources.

I get the same email all the time: 'Re: Your Amazon.com order' and when you open it, 'HOT RUSSIAN LESBIANS WITHOUT A CREDIT CARD, RIGHT NOW!' I kid you not. It comes from about 40 different addresses, too. LOL.
WHoooo!!! I love Russian lesbians without credit cards!

Because I have three or four websites, among other reasons, my flow of spam is remarkable. I have finally gotten it under decent control. Here's how:

1. My ISP filters out a lot via Brightmail. I never see those. That probably eliminates more of my spam than anything else.
2. I changed my primary email address several months ago and have been much more careful about throwing it around. I use spamgourmet.com to create temporary self-destructing email addresses. Whenever I have to do something on line that requires an email address, I give 'em a self-destructing email address via http://www.spamgourmet.com. Works well. For example, do you know that little weather-monitoring App called "weatherbug?" When I downloaded it, I gave a self-destructing email address. Since it "expired" spamgourmet has eaten 377 email messages sent to that address, which existed only long enough for me to submit it to the Weatherbug people.
3. I subscribe to http://www.riskfreemail.com. It costs a few dollars a month, and is not 100% effective, but I'm finding it worthwhile. I won't get into how it works, but the bottom line is that you run your email through it and if it sees an email of ANY kind it doesn't recognize, it requires the sender to verify that the message is being sent by a live person. Then, the system recognizes that sender's email address from then on.
4. Instead of Outlook, or whatever, I use an email client called Courier (formerly Calypso) (rosecitysoftware.com). It is the best email program I've ever used and it has excellent spam filters built in.

With all of this, I still get 5-10 SPAM per day. But, I'd probably get hundreds without these measures.

I recently installed Mailwasher, a free download that helps to identify Spam and bounce it off the server before you download your e-mails. It helps an it's free.

Peter, I tried Mailwasher about 3-4 months ago and it would crash (old system running Windows 98) more times than not. There were other issues including setup (it wouldn't accept the default return address) and many of the messages came with a forged 'from' so bouncing wouldn't work.
I haven't used it lately, but I might try it again on my newer computer running Windows XP.

I use McAfee SpamKiller and am mostly satisfied. It's user-configurable, and I've finally got to where it gets almost everything, but the spammersnakes are imaginative if not ethical. Even when you block on specific words, a few of the creeps manage to slime by despite the presence of the filtered words. I assume it's some kind encapsulation trick, but I'm not going to waste time trying to figure it out as long as the Delete button works.

A while back, someone asked why people are so much angrier about spam than about junk snail mail. IMO, it's simple. Junk snail mail is self limiting because the jerks that send it have to pay bulk postage of a few cents per item. Spammers work in an almost cost-free environment and can thus afford to be more profligate in their pigeon-like assaults on our screens.

Tony,
I have been using mailwasher for several months now with no problems on a Win98 pc. Did you try uninstalling it and then reinstalling?

And what about those little spamlettes we seem sooo bent on volluntarily imposing on each other.

You know the ones.....

Send this to 15 of your closest friends and you will get a cute little message

or

Send this to 15 of your closest friends and you will get your bestest wish. If you don't you will have bad luck for about a million years.

or

If you send this to 15 of your closest friends you will instantly become Bill Gates' bestest buddy and he will send you the secret code to his bank account.

My mom must hate me because no matter HOW many times I tell you they are spam she still keeps sending them to me!

********

I use Yahoo mail. They must have a pretty good filter as I only get a dozen or so that get through each week. I report those and I rarely see them ever again.
