Tunes To Play long To - Low Bb Flute

Post by Rich_N_ »

Hi folks,

A quick question. Has anyone any recommendations for tunes - either audio or YouTube - that are played on the Bb Flute?

I know of the obvious ones by Michael McGoldrick (Tehanns and Desert Road) and James Ducan MacKenzie from Breabach has done some.

The reason I ask is that I have recently purchased a Giles Lehart low Bb and I like to play long to music at home.

Thanks in advance,

Rich

Frankie Kennedy playing Dobbin's Flowery Vale, followed by a slow version of the reel I call Dorey's:

Jean-Michel Veillon here:

You'll hear Matt Molloy playing Bb flute on a few of his recordings (most of those tracks are on The Heathery Breeze, but you'll find at least one Bb track on almost every one of his solo recordings plus the ones he did with Sean Keane and Sean Keane plus Liam O'Flynn (The Fire Aflame), but I believe that's an antique flute that's pitched a bit high compared with A=440, so it comes out closer to B.

A while back I was contemplating selling my Wilkes Bb and recorded a few things with it that I could use as sound samples. After listening, I decided to keep it. ;-) Here's a link to one of them:

Matt Molloy's Bb flute is indeed actually in B (or very close to it), a fact that made me sad upon the realization - now I can only say that John Gallagher made me what I think is the first 8-keyed modern B flute :)

Kevin Crawford has a Bb flute, not sure about which recordings it's on (although In Good Company, apparently), but there's this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsH8Sq3NJj8 and also P.J. Crotty borrowed it for a track on Happy to Meet, which is one of my favourite tracks of flute music.

That tune of Frankie's I call Carty's Pigeon (from Bro. Steve's tinwhistle transcriptions page, from Paddy Carty), but Sean Moloney said his dad had it from his grandfather and called it "The Soldier Who Returned" - I think Frankie's version has the B part more like Eddie Moloney's, but in any case you could convincingly make a case for calling it Eddie Moloney's, Stephen Moloney's, Carty's Pigeon (on the gate), Dorey's, or "The Soldier who Returned", I suppose!

By no means putting myself on any kind of level with exemplars previously mentioned, but I've recorded a few things on my low Bb which you might find useful/helpful - on my Soundcloud and YouTube channels (see "signature" in post footer).
I respect people's privilege to hold their beliefs, whatever those may be (within reason), but respect the beliefs themselves? You gotta be kidding!

"Deadly buzz" and "Kitty lie over" by Mick O'Brien and Caoimhín O Raghallaigh I don't have access to them just now, but they possibly both have tracks in B and B-flat

There's only one track on flute between the two CDs, though, and that's on an F flute.

I’m working on learning one of Sylvain Barou’s, on his album with Padraig Rynne and Donal Lunny has a real nice set in Bb , number 7 “Ton Disanv/First Hard Rain”.

On Wooden Flute Obsession volume 2:
Kevin Crawford - w/Mick Conneely (bouzouki)

New Recording [2003]
(3:12 Reels) The Hut in the Bog/ Creggs Pipes
Bb Flute made by Michael Grinter

This was recorded for WFO. Not sure if it then also appeared on one of his albums. He recorded a bunch of tunes for his intended "Bb Flute" album, which may have become lost recordings.

On Wooden Flute Obsession volume 3:
Ronan Browne

New Recording [2005]
(1:33 Air) Rud Beag Mall
Bb Flute by Geoff Woof

a short, processed tune composed by Ronan.
