I purchased a lovely half set in B last summer from Bill Haneman.

You might also consider Richard Patkos. I have a B chanter of his that I love! Stable, sweet tone, and in tune. He is probably in, or close to your price range. Bruce Childress also makes B chanters.

I'd be more than cautious with Patkos... Everybody probably knows why...

Martin Preshaw was making up a bunch of unkeyed or one-key chanters the other day. You may want to contact him and see if one is a B in the works, and if so, what the price would be. I have a 5-key B from him, and it is both lovely sounding, and looking.

Sorry, but this seems a little over the top!

Has anyone here ordered from Patkos recently? Feel free to PM me instead, since I know there have already been discussions about Patkos. That being said, I read good things about his chanters.

What do people think of Childress B chanters? They are also reasonably priced.

I have a Childress B and like it very much. The finger spread is very natural for me, and I have small hands.

Personally, it doesn't sound "over the top" in the slightest.

With the current exchange rate I would say Joe Kennedy is the best deal going.

Good to hear about the Childress B, thanks for the info. It sounds like flat chanters vary a bit in regards to the stretch.

He recently told me that the wait for a B chanter was a few months and for a D 1/2 set was 1-1.5 years.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Michael Hubbert. He has been making great B and Bflat sets. I've been lucky enough to have one for a bit now. His waiting list has grown but used sets do come to market. Seth Gallagher used to do B sets and they are nice if you can find one second hand. I'd say try and play a few styles of B (Kenna, Coyne, Egan, Harrington). I believe most makers doing flat sets are basing their measurements on one of the well known classic sets, or variations thereof. Figure out which style you prefer and also which finger spacing feels best and work with that maker. There is quite a difference in spread with flat sets. Interestingly the spacing on my C and my B set is identical, just the overall length is different.

The tone-hole spacing on mine are not identical, but they are pretty close. It surprised me.
