B chanter recommendations?

Post by dyersituations »

Any recommendations on a reasonably price B chanter (sub $1K)? I will set aside more money if necessary.

I started on a D practice set about a year ago, and while I love the instrument, I think I would prefer playing a more mellow/quiet chanter (especially for playing solo and practicing). After listening a bunch to the Mick O'Brien albums with his B set, the B chanter might be the sound I'm looking for.

It seems like there are both fewer B chanter makers and fewer used B chanters for sale.

Thanks much.

P.S. - Feel free to PM opinions if you'd rather.

I am planning on selling two B chanter and a set of drones. I have a B made by Childress. Cocobolo with C nat key. Also have a Kennedy B in Rosewood, also has a C nat key. The drones are cocobolo with pear mounts made by myself. They look and sound really nice. Pm me if interested in anything.

I love my Martin Preshaw B set, but a chanter of his would be above your budget.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've heard good things about Rogge chanters. And the price is only a little bit above what I was thinking of spending.

I've seen his chanters listed before, but I haven't read much about the chanters. Does anyone have experience with them? I know he's a member on the boards.

Brad Angus is located nearby in Vancouver, WA. His chanters are a good amount more than I was thinking of spending, but based on recommendations so far, I might reconsider how much I plan to spend.

Kenneth McNichol in Scotland makes B pipes. B chanters start at $US700. Keys are $US80 extra.

Does anyone have experience with Kenneth McNicholl's chanters? That being said the chanter on uilleann obsession has been sold.

I have a McNicholl D chanter. Two serious players here both said it was excellent chanter when they tried it.
