I've always wondered about the title of this tune since learning 'tipping the velvet' is a pseudonym for lesbian love-making.

From what Wikipedia (I know, I know) tells me, that is obscure Victorian pornographic slang referring to oral sex. . . The novel of that title was published in 1998 and is quite self-consciously attempting to give this bit of slang wider currency and with the specific association with lesbian activity.
Trimming the Velvet on the other hand. . .particularly in the male-centric world of ITM just doesn't seem to me to have much of a connection (
