Re: Top 25 Posters as of 4-1-03
Thanks, I guess, but however did I get chosen for such a sublist? I can think of several, notably but not only Jim Stone, that post both more often and more usefully, than me.John Allison wrote:Top 25 posters as of April 1, 2003

Besides, I just can't get over a certain nervousness that Dale chose the First of April as the cutoff date for the list...

I've been holding off making the (to me) obvious comment on this passage for a while. But since nobody else has made it, I can't resist any longer.John Allison wrote:Top 25 posters as of April 1, 2003

This has to be the funniest example on this board of 'foot in mouth so deep it's coming out the other end' since the famous 'you people don't deserve me' remark.
Mr. Allison's intention, I take it, was to accuse 20 of the 25 most frequent posters of having nothing to say. But that's not what the quote actually says. Taken literally, he purports to be giving a list of the 25 most frequent posters with something to say, right? Since the list contains only five names, the implication is not just that 20 people have nothing to say, but that none of the other 20 spots can be filled from the remaining members of the board.
Most amusing of all, Mr Allison's own name is missing from the list. Lots of words come to mind to describe this post, John, but 'bitter' isn't one of them.

Crushed, simply crushed. All those times in which I asked "what kind of recorder did Capn Kirk play in that movie?" for naught....John Allison wrote:Top 25 posters as of April 1, 2003

Oh well, I'm just a lurker, really.
There's a story about a monastery with a rule of silence.
Each year the monk deemed the best gets to
say a single sentence at dinner.
The winning monk gets up and
says: 'The food here stinks!'
Next year's monk says:
"I think it's pretty good, myself.'
A year later another monk makes
this pronouncement:
"I think we should stop all this bickering!'
Steffi looks fine--saw a lot of Dave Chalmers, too.
Ted Sider defended his 4 dimensionalism book,
Jerry Fodor defended Hume agaisnt Wittgenstein,
Robert Van Gulick defended Frank Jackson's
new explanstion of why the knowledge
argument fails. Australia was well represented.
But I mostly roamed around SF looking for
flutes and whistles! Heavenly. Best

(never underestimate the still small voice in the valley--my favorite poster has less than 10!)
There were some neat flutes at Lark in the Morning,
near Fishermans Wharf. Played some pakistani
flutes there, one in cocus, which sounded
very good and seemed well in tune,
though how long they will survive before
cracking, I wouldn't wager. Didn't
buy anything, though-also made
it to Haigh Ashbury Music, which
had some unplayable cane flutes
that were priced at about 10 times
what they would have been worth
if one could play them.
