Favorite players - Instruments, not artists!

Post by ecohawk »

I wonder how many of us have decided on favorites in whatever keys you choose. I'm talking about the first whistle you pick up when you just want to play for your own personal satisfaction. If it's easier, choose more than one but rank them by some category like size, or material.

I have seven that fit this description for me sorted low to high:

3 Goldie tunable low D
6 Copeland low F
2 Goldie alto A
7 Harper Bb
4 Dion Bloodwood C
5 Busman boxwood/maple D+
1 Sindt brass head/sterling tube D

If I had to pick one favorite, regardless of key, it would be the Goldie alto A.

Which of your whistles are your favorites?

Tell us something.: Hi Nano. I was somewhat active on the Chiffboards maybe 5 or 6 years ago, participating in several whistle tours (Bracker, Hardy, Ellis). I took a break from the Chiffboards, and music mostly, for several years because I got a full-time job and had a baby. I'm easing back into the music, though (which is great, I missed it). It's good to be back!

This week, it's been the Bracker low D. Starting tomorrow, when I have to mail it to the next lucky contestant ( ), my go-to is again going to be the MK low D, followed by the lower Gens: C, Bb, A.

Tell us something.: I like whistles, flutes, lyres, cittern/mandolin/bouzouki family instruments, as well as heavy and nasty slap bass. Languages, linguistics, history (especially Migration Period and Bronze Age Europe), cuisine from various parts of Latin America, chili growing, bushcraft, and the works of JRR Tolkien also tickle my fancy.

Sindt, Reviol, Lofgren.

All of 'em!

Some days the list might also include Burke, MK, and Freeman whistles, too.

It's like choosing a favourite child.

Since I only have two, I'm going to have to side with my Kerry Optima low D over my Generation high D. I have play the D scale in two(!) octaves on it and it doesn't sound like a dying mouse.

Why did I think this was going to be a discussion about favourite whistleplayers?

Anyway, I'll get my coat.

The whistles I pick up the most are my car whistles, my MK Low D and Burke High D. I do most of my practicing at odd times in the car!

The best player of all my whistles, though, has got to be the Generation C I've had since around 1980. It's just perfect, and I've not played its equal. Wouldn't leave that one in the car!

Tell us something.: May 2022, I'm a second-time beginner to the whistle and low whistle after a three-year gap due to a chest injury brought to an end twelve years of playing. I've started on a high whistle and much is coming back quickly but it will be a while before I can manage a Low D again where my interest really lies. I chiefly love slow airs rather than dance tunes and am a fan of the likes of Davy Spillane, Eoin Duignan, Fred Morrison and Paddy Keenan.

Favorite whistle: Shaw D. But I really enjoy the Waltons D too.

Favorite player at the moment: Micho Russell, or whoever I'm listening to. I'm no dancer, but Micho Russell's playing always makes my feet want to move.

Onyx low d is my fav. It's overtones are glorious.

I suppose the title is ambiguous (I therefore edited it just now). Apologies. I was trying to distinguish instruments you actually prefer to play from instruments you simply own or covet for some other reason.
