Bad Sweetone - only me?

Post by Brus »

I always read raves about the Sweetone on this board.

Am I the only one to get a bad one?

Weak and breathy. I've got more than a dozen other high D's, so I have comparisons. (Plus Bb's, a low D, a couple C's).

I've owned maybe 5-6 dozen Sweetones, maybe more. I used them for beginner classes and gave them away to kids who showed an interest in learning. I never had a bad one. That doesn't mean there aren't some duds out there. I'm not as fond of the C as I am of the D. But they both do the job.

Take the head off. They are tunable you know but it might take some warm water to get the head moving. Have a look around for bits of extraneous plastic and such. Make sure the windway is clean.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

It depends what you like. I don't like 'em. Never met one I did like. Other people like them.

Out of curiosity I bought a D and a C when they first came out. Based on those I have always thought they are positively evil.

I agree with all the above replies.

Jerry Freeman does wonders with these.

Just sayin'.

Great, now I keep thinking of a movie, but with the main character being a whistle with its head spinning.

The Exor-whistle.....or maybe The Fipple-cist... :o

I understand the Sweetone C is, like, totally hot in Danish pop music this year.

(At 00:06 and 00:56, so you don't have to watch the whole thing.)

And yes, his fingering is correct, but the whistle is faked/sync'd to the recording. So who knows what whistle you're actually hearing (but it could be a Sweetone).

can you see this easily or do you have to watch/try/hear/check ...?
wish i could do this

edit:
to say something on topic as well

i do have sweettones and megs, and all are good and easy to play
one has to be carefull with the breath, not to much air please in the lower tones but everything else is fine
good looking, feeling good in the hand witrh that edge at the back... and sound nice

... just one sweetone in C wich i have is a beast, i am sure its me but its not easy to play
the lowest hole is smal and "far away" and because of a thick black lacquer its not easy to feel where it is ... its also very delicate with the needed aircontrol .... but as i said i am sure its me not the whistle why i get so many wrong tones out of it

Sometimes it's hard to tell. But in this case, the fade at the end of the second cue is unrealistic. And the same whistle part continues to play throughout the song, even when he's not playing. For example, at the very end of the song. :-)

[ And sorry, it's a C whistle, not D. Corrected above. ]
