Oh, for sure!. I wasn't wagging the finger at you in any way, just offering a suggestion. But at this point most subjects have been discussed ad nauseam and some of us only have a limited number of key strokes left in us. So it is just a good idea for those of us in that age bracket to pace our responses. :)

Ah, I'm just teasing you! :P I totally get it. I am actually one of the moderators on a NAF forum and I know how that goes. However, I now know what it's like from the newbie side and just want those questions answered the easy way!!

Guess I'd better get out of that quick if I am going to spend a lot of time trying to learn a new instrument. Reading Brother Steve's stuff is showing me that there is a difference between being able to play the whistle and being able to PLAY the whistle. I'm going to have to learn some background on the music itself. Good info there. I'm gonna have to do more reading - and listening!

Just how old are ya'll?! You can't be THAT old! I'm not a spring chicken myself . . .

It's not the years that are the issue. It's the miles on the odometer! :)

I hope you maintain your enthusiasm for the whistle. It's nice to see.

Tell us something.: I've been playing whistles since 2010. I love how varied whistles are in their design, construction, tone, and handling. Though I've largely settled on what I enjoy playing, I'm still a sucker for an interesting new design.

This is my favorite youtube whistling video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qWmeGfJX3w

It's a low D whistle, but soprano and tenor D use the same techniques, just a different grip, and the tenor D sounds better (ducks as high whistlers throw tomatoes).

Here's another favorite:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Gl_R1sl-S8

This one's on a soprano D. When I first started, I thought, "If I can only ever play as good as this guy, I'll be happy. I'd still be happy. I really like the sound of whistle and rhythm guitar. I'm trying to get my wife to learn so we can go on the road, but no luck so far.

And here's a video of Julie Fowlis and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh singing together and playing a pretty sweet whistle duet (starts about 1:30):

Oh, also check out this page:
http://www.colingoldie.de/videos.html

These are videos Colin has collected to showcase his whistles. Fun to listen to and a lot of good music.

Phil Hardy's also got some cool videos:

Jan >^..^< wrote: Also, can you suggest any non-trad music? I would like to explore my options.
For non-trad music, I have to mention Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon, they make me.

Also wikifonia.com has lots of lead sheets for all types of music.

And you can use the search function to check past threads related to South African Kwela music which often features whistles.

Best wishes.

I know you asked for whistle tunes specifically but do not discount listening to tunes on other instruments.

Many whistle tunes you hear are being played on whistles in different keys to the one you have, so in some cases you'd better listening to tunes played in the same key as you but on different instruments.

Also, if you play along, not being quite in tune will be less painful to the ear.

I DO know you can get apps that can alter tunes so they play slowly and in your favourite key but I've never worked out how to use one. I'm a bit of a luddite.
Finally feel like I'm getting somewhere. It's only taken 6 years.

On the Brother Steve's Whistle page be sure to check out the further study link.
You'll find a nice sample of GREAT trad whistlers with transcriptions and analysis.
Highly recommended and free too.

OK, one last reply to Jan's inquiries, for what it is worth. I have been listening to Phil Hardy's webcasts lately, and finding much great music to listen to, for free, here:

http://www.kerrywhistles.com/movie.php?groupID=40#

And, my post on Chiff about Phil's webcasts here:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=92713

So much music, I know, and little time to get to know it all. But it's a rich cache of music to draw from , or be inspired by, in my opinion.

Have a blast!

Thanks! :)

I took my "Songs of the Irish Whistle 1" by Joanie Madden to school today and played it for the kids (7 and 8 year olds). They really liked it! It is a very good CD. There are things in there that remind me of bluegrass music. I grew up in the mountains of Virginia. There was lots of good fiddle music. I hear some similarities.

I got the "Everybreath" CD today (James McNally). It's not bad, but it sounds more new agey to me.

And the listening continues! :)

This tune sounds absolutely gorgeous on whistle - just try it!

Even better if you drop it to Bmin and play it on an A whistle.
