Why so slow?

Post by brewerpaul »

Does anyone have any idea why these Chiff boards are so slow to load? On my computer (Windows 7,using Firefox) they take a very long time, sometimes timing out. If I try on my computer at work, it never loads at all. I look at several other musical boards (Banjo, Uke, Mandolin) and they all load virtually instantly.

I've been experiencing that too, although never so long I actually get a time out. Since pings, tracert and name resolution all come back nice and fast I'm assuming it's an issue the database or the servers it's hosted on.

I think between myself and my significant other, we could fix it. But I highly doubt anyone is interested in handing the reigns over to someone so new to the forum. And I understand. But it's so annoying that I'm nearly ready to give up. I have little patience for websites that chronically have issues.

Don't quit guys! Lynn-- why not approach the moderators and see if they're willing to let you and your husband tweak things. From what I've seen of your work, you're up to the task.

Paul, I asked this about a month ago. That thread should have more info, without Dale or the mods needing to re-hash any explanations.

And here's some more tangentially-related info.

Thanks Thomaston. In that thread Dale mentioned the difficulties in moving the board. Might be better/easier to just start a new one and keep the old one as read only archives.

He was offered help, for example by LynnB several times
I do belive she can help.
One just has to take it ;-)

But a new Board also has to be updated regular and be maintananced, there need to be someone who know what he/she does all the time!
This website isnt up to date in content, information, software, usability .... and its so slow that it isnt fun at all visiting it.
I belive if nothing changes soon, many people start to leave, and that would be a pitty, wouldnt it?

Is it possible that this forum is noticeably faster since it has been down due to that SQL error yesterday? - Have you mods deleted some ballast or optimised some db-queries, or have I just hit the board at a lucky moment now?

Tell us something.: Long ago, I was told that I faked iTrad whistle work very well. I took that comment to heart. 20 years of private lessons - and many, many hours of rehearsal later - I certainly hope I have improved...

True. The board has been so slow, that while it does not time out on my computer, I often personally time out. And yes... I have noticed it to be a bit faster, in the last day or two. Overall, it needs help.

Best.
