Great researching Tommy! NPU will have to archive these documents, very interesting stuff.

Re: Pipers in the 1901 census
Interesting stuff, assuming we have the right men. Rowsome's a pretty unique name, but other names are more common, perhaps they're different people, for example they list John Cash as born in Wexford and Dinney Delaney born in Roscommon - thought they hailed from Wicklow and Galway. John Wayland was a photographer? Billy Andrews a pawnbroker?

Well there are other clues. We know Cash was a horse dealer and he was an itinerant so that would easily explain the counties. Also his age matches O'Neills info on him.
Likewise with Delaney. He's the only Delaney in Boulgers Lane, Ballinasloe. Delaney and his wife ran a dance hall there. His birth county, Roscommon, was mentioned before in a An Piobaire article.
I knew Wayland was a photographer from communication with his decendants.
O'Neill mentioned Billy Andrews' aunt Eva and his middle name Nathaniel was mentioned in an An Piobaire article some time ago too.
The only one I'm not really 100% sure about is Turlough McSweeney. His age matches up with other accounts of his life but thats all I have to go on.
Well, I just did a quick search and McSweeney's wifes name, Sarah, matches up too.

Re: Pipers in the 1901 census
I wondered where the address info was - trying it myself I see you search for a name and the occupants show up with the addy provided, here's John Potts for instance. The scanned docs don't show that though. Also seem to recall someone posting about this in years past; in particular I remember looking at the records for the Rowsomes.
The pdfs showing the actual documents like you provided have the word "reels" in the URLs, appropriately enough.

Breandan Breathnach used to say that was a euphemism for a whorehouse they ran. Don't know if that was true but it made a good story.Delaney and his wife ran a dance hall there
Good stuff Tommy.

47 men named James Ennis in Dublin in 1911. My guess is Jimmy is the 26 year old bilingual clerk in the census office, born in Co Dublin.

Re: Pipers in the 1901 census
That could well be him alright Kevin.
I had difficulty finding James Ennis in the past. Not knowing when he moved from the Naul to Finglas was one problem and if and where he lived in between.
Also in the 1901 census most of the address' in the Naul area are listed as being in County Meath. Ennis was and still is a very popular name in that area and plenty of James' too!

Re: Pipers in the 1901 census
Thanks again, Tom. I was under the impression that Carney learned the pipes in the States. I think your man there is the right age, however; Carney died in 1938 at about 75, IIRC. His grandfather - and father? - were professional pipers, too.
It occurred to me that you could just search for 'piper' as occupation: here are the results for 1911, and here's 1901. Along with some of your finds you get a handful of mystery men whose names aren't given, just initials. Also a warpiper or two, plus a pipefitter and a carver of tobacco pipes, who probably made their way into Flood's books.
But there are more than a few who are wholly new to me, like Lawrence Burnes of Clare or Thomas Farrell of Westmeath. Maybe they were mentioned in passing in old issues of An Píobaire.

Re: Pipers in the 1901 census
When I started playing the pipes in the 1970s there were two "grand old men" of piping here, Leo Purcell and Dave Page. I was honoured to meet both men, hear Dave play, and receive some reeds and reedmaking tips from Leo.
Leo must be there in the census, no?

Dave Page was born in 1906. As Tom noted above, he's in the 1911 census:
