Re: Traditional Irish Pipers' Costume
I rather think this is the corect getup the traditional Great (as in GHB) look
Does anyone know more about this instrument of if it is still being played anywhere ?
and for the traditional look for the union piper...... nice picture of O'Meally here http://seanreidsociety.org/SRSJ3/3.01/O ... reface.pdf
If mouth blown pipes are called the 'Great' PIpes e.g. GHB should bellows pipes be called 'lesser'

Not all mouth-blown pipes are called "great". In fact, the vast majority are not. In fact, the vast majority of them aren't even from Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales or any of the islands dotted about round here.Elmek wrote:If mouth blown pipes are called the 'Great' PIpes e.g. GHB should bellows pipes be called 'lesser'

Last thing you (or anyone else) should do is take anything on the C&F seriously - it has a reputation for being cantankerous

Does it? I have heard that once or twice, but it's surprised me when I've heard it. It's almost unbelievably genteel and polite compared with almost anywhere else on the web. You should see the classical music forums!Elmek wrote:Last thing you (or anyone else) should do is take anything on the C&F seriously - it has a reputation for being cantankerous

Re: Traditional Irish Pipers' Costume
Happily, there is quite an array of choice available to the Irish piper who is faced with the dilemma of what to wear. Here are some more possibilities for the livery-conscious to consider, and remember that an expanded wardrobe offers the possibility of social mobility otherwise unavailable to the raiment-disprepared:

That's surprisingly accurate, for what it is. Did you have a hand in that, Richard?pancelticpiper wrote:

Noob. You missed the full-on-blowtorch flamewars of 10 years ago, real invictive schtuff. No moderators. Good times, good times. I think that finally came to a close when Brian Howard threatened legal action against Dale. Or we just ceased to care anymore.benhall.1 wrote:Does it? Nice to see old timers still posting to the board after all these years. It's fun to tell people how this forum is described as being for "For uilleann pipes, and the surly people who play them."
I like the bloke with the basket on his head, looks like something out of the original Wickerman film. Good man, Lord Summerisle.
A friend points out that the Irish piping tradition is the only one without a costume to go along with it - although O'Meally's was rooted in tradition, from the description of piper Gaynor ca. 200 years ago.

Eamonn Ceannt, who was the secretary of one of the pipers clubs in Dublin (Parnell St?), was very scathing of O'Mealy's attire. "Mealy spoiled his playing by the ridiculous costume he wore". According to Ceannt the union/uilleann pipes developed long after "irish national dress had disappeared".
Ceannt, who also played the War Pipes, was known to wear a saffron kilt.
