Official Trailer for Olwell doc

Post by jemmoore »

I know it's been a while since I've put anything up, but there's been a lot going on lately...in any case, here's the official trailer for the doc, hopefully it makes you want to see the whole thing! We have more interviews coming up this summer, including Brian Finnegan, John Williams, and Matt Molloy. I think we have some great footage, but let me know what you think. It is my hope that the trailer will make folks want to see the doc, regardless of whether they know anything about Irish trad or not.

Lovely stuff. Great trailer.

Since I doubt it will be aired in The Netherlands, could you send a link when it's finished.
I would be greatly appreciated.
I'd love to see the complete documentary.

Fascinating to watch what you've shown us so far.

Like Toon, I can't believe it will be aired here either (Bosnia) so a link to view or purchase would be much appreciated when your work is complete.
It may be the closest I ever get to an Olwell flute!

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus

Really enjoyed all the bits you've posted so far and very much looking forward to the finished Film. I may have missed discussion of this elsewhere, but is it being shot entirely on SLR? Looks great.

I assume the damaged fingers shown during the wood lathe turning are Pat's? Does he tell story of which machine he tangled with and lost to? Or perhaps the injury occurred in an unrelated accident? For those who may wonder (I know you aren't wondering Denny  ), I'm not being insensitive here; typically people who have lost or damaged their hands in course of woodworking aren't shy talking about it. If that's how he was injured it certainly would add to the overall story being told.

I've two damaged fingers  :P

and, of course, I was wondering
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
It's dizzying, the possibilities. Ashes, Ashes all fall down.

I hope that I'm not being too fussy, but I would like to see the speakers identified in the trailer. I don't want to have to guess who I'm listening too.

And who's that Jethro Tool guy? :D

Best wishes.

Thanks for all the nice comments, I'm glad you're all enjoying where I'm going with this...as for the damaged fingers, those belong to Aaron, who lost them at a tender young age of 18mos or so to a lathe drive chain, thought it looked cool and wanted to touch it! He talks a little about it in one of our interviews that will be going in the movie.

As for identifying speakers, I watched a lot of documentary trailers before sitting down to put this one together, and the convention for trailers seems to be not using lower third subtitles, and frankly most speakers aren't on screen long enough to put one in, and it is quite distracting to have the words changing every couple of seconds. So I made the executive decision to stay with the convention and leave you wondering :) ....but not to worry, all will be revealed with the feature.

For those who can't wait, in order of appearance:

Eliot Grasso
Patrick Olwell
Tina Eck
John Bullock
Aaron Olwell
Josh Dukes

We have many more interviews in the can, and several more to do, but I wanted to get a trailer out to raise awareness and create excitement, which I hope it's doing. Keep the comments coming, and I'll try to answer any questions that come up. For those in far off places, I believe we will have DVD and Blu-ray available sometime soon after the initial screenings in Virginia and Colorado. More info as it becomes available...

It's terrific, Jem! I hope to be getting a new Olwell in the next 6 months or so, and it's wonderful just to have a glimpse into the environment.

Wow! I'm just a newbie whistler and I've no business in here... but, that is some downright good craftsmanship right there in the editing room and the craftsmanship of the flutemaker Patrick Olwell speaks for itself in the documentary. That's a grand slam video!
