RR 1565 on Ebay

Post by MarkP »

I suspect everyone's seen this one already, on with no reserve, 15 bids and counting, with 'ox bone' ferrules/end cap it says

This is a very beautiful flute, I've been following it. I would love to own it, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.

Yes, it couldn't be elephant ivory, that would be illegal... :swear:

Lmao, yeah "Ox bone", nice try by the seller. At least we can be pretty certain it's pre-ban Ivory

I own the twin brother to this one, though mine is in better shape.
Mine is #1539 and all the rings (ivory) are intact.
A crack in the barrel and head....but it's playing lovely. Nice flute.
I dont' have the ivory crown, though....shame.
But they were absolutely made by the same hands. Very very rich/red cocus, lovely key work.

Tell us something.: in two words, Rudall & Rose. but since a minimum of 100 characters is required, I should list a number of makers I found extremely interesting… I don't even know how much are 100 characters...

I am the owner of #3632. Stylistically it is not that similar to #1565 other than that it has ivory ( "Ox Bone" ) ferrules and cap and even then the profile and sizes are quite different. In #1565 the tuning slide has quite a bulge around the tenon not dissimilar to many Potter flutes of the time.
I would also beg to suggest that the quality of the key work on #3632 is of a much finer with crow foot C and C# and heavy guage brass springs which are stepped away from the key body.
In the 1851 Rudall & Rose catalogue flutes which were ivory mounted instead of silver received a reduction in price of 10s 6d (55pence in new money !!!!)

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

<<nerd mode>>I think you'll find that that's 52 1/2 pence, not 55 pence.<</nerd mode>>

OK, I'm wrong. :tomato:

So if Birds Eye Maple was "three ha'pence a foot" I would have paid for 20 inches too much!

I am the owner of #3632.
And so you're a lucky man!
Still it is much similar than RR "standard" modell, but you're right as yours looks even finer.
