Bison horn

Has anyone tried to turn American bison horn? It seems pretty cheap on eBay.

Aren't they hollow, like cattle horns? I like the idea of using elk antler though.

A lot of elk antler is poached. Antlers taken, the animal left to rot. Happens all too often where I live. Sickening.

Why does anybody do this, when there are sheds to be collected? I don't get it.

I think bison horn is hollow for the most part of its length, and might therefore be a bit problematic for mounts. I don't really know what the structure is like. A couple of years ago I bought some horn tips in a woodturners' shop, which were no use at all, no idea which animal these were from.
Water buffalo horn, however, has a good bit of solid length which can be used, it is a strong material and can be polished to high gloss. Here is a pic of a Bulgarian chanter made from buffalo horn, with antler mounts.

No, it was made by Apostol Apostolov from Beloslav, near Varna, Bulgaria.
There is a buffalo farm not far from his place, I guess that's where he gets the material.
The sound is very nice, too...

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

I had a set with buffalo (not bison) horn once upon a time. Loved the look of it, but the decorative rings began to split after a few of our withering winters. Or maybe it was the simmering summers. Most likely the combo of both. :(

Farmed elk antler is available, but I guess it's important to know your source. There's a whole market in shed elk antlers-- and people searching the woods for them in the western US. they are valuable for their supposed medicinal properties. We had a bull elk killed for its antlers near our ranch just last fall.

So I'm curious what some other alternatives to ivory are for mounts (besides the plastic faux ivory) that are attractive AND durable.

Moose and caribou (reindeer) have large and wide antlers.

Yeah ... I wouldn't recommend that. I've seen what a moose can do to a hunter who got too close and forgot to take the safety off. :tomato:
