Percentage of cane in your pipes
right now, what reeds are cane(arundo donax) & what reeds are composite (fiber, metal, plastic, etc)
in your pipes? (your MAIN set of uilleann...the ones you use the most)
Running under the assumption that all of our chanter reeds are cane,
or some other material normally found in nature,
(if yours isnt, please PM me asap )
are all your regs cane?, composite?
or do you have them mixed?
for ex, a cane bass reg & bronze bari & tenor regs?
same goes for drones.

Re: Percentage of cane in your pipes
No options for elder then? Or 3/4 sets for that matter.

Re: Percentage of cane in your pipes
Mmm no option for cane regulator and mixed drone either, or even preferred setup but making do until time or money allow for preferred choice.
Suppose the "surly" option covers these situations.
Oh well until I have time to make some more cane drone reeds the answers "surly"
Feels a bit like local elections and spoiling the paper by scrawling in crayon none of the above on the ballot paper.

Re: Percentage of cane in your pipes
consider elder a naturally occurring non-composite material, for all purposes covered under the "cane" option.Mr.Gumby wrote:No options for elder then? Or 3/4 sets for that matter.
thats the 'nub' of the thing: natural vs. non-natural, FLOBT.
3/4 same as 'full set', even tho it aint.

only problem is that by changing the poll, now all votes have to be cast once again.

All plastic in the drones and regs. Thank goodness with the weather we've been having. 70 and sunny yesterday, 40 and rain tomorrow.

Bruce "BC" Childress makes regulator reeds from Arundo dasani, i.e., from Dasani water bottles.

- Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

Full set:
chanter: 1 cane
drones: 3 composite cane bodies and basswood tongues
regs: 3 redwood (Wood really is the way to go if you can do it. Super stable and good tone for regs).

Re: Percentage of cane in your pipes
3/4th set
Cane chanter reed
Spruce regulator reeds
Wooden drone reeds of varying type.
To the people with multiple sets, one containing more-or-less cane, and the other containing 'other' (composite/wooden): Is there a more-than-noticeable difference between the two in the likes of air needed/stability/having to sit down every once in a while and just tune them up for a bit? Or is it just a 'I'll take one or the other' type of situation?
