Les Lieber turns 100 on March 16, and he still performs weekly in NYC. Catch him while you can!

Here's a video with an interview and some whistling - http://blogs.wsj.com/photojournal/2012/ ... turns-100/

Tell us something.: I play the whistle, I used to play flute but have Dupuytren's contracture so can only play whistle now which is fine. Mostly play sessions around Canterbury Kent area.

Awww ...

That's wonderful stuff.

Les's whistle sounds just perfect alongside Django's guitar. I would say the best chance is, that's an all metal Generation whistle he's playing. However, around that time, I believe there were quite a few "no name" whistles of the same construction, so I can't guess how strong the odds are for or against the Generation. In any case, it would have been an all metal whistle of that type.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Good stuff! Thanks for the links.
That's a real encouragement to us elderly. I remember Django but never noticed Les before. What a man!

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Jerry's talking about the one you can only hear (in the track with Django).

Thank you. I liked the Django track a lot, though I was ready for the piano to take over when it did.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

Right. The clip that's embedded in the New York Times article was recorded in 1945. Generation started using the plastic whistleheads around 1958.

Best wishes,
Jerry
