I will concur with the opinion that cello playing is sexy on women, more than men.
Acoustic guitars are sexy on anyone.

Mind you, she'd look good playing a half-eaten turnip ocarina in a sack.

And of course, lest we forget this bit of musical sexiness...

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I dunno whether that counts as a recorder ... not for these purposes. :)

Mind you, it's not the size that's important really ...

You know that's actually a standard (3-foot) bass recorder played by the world's shortest woman?

Well, let's see. There's ... no, not that. Maybe ... unh-uh, not that either. How about ... nope, still nothing.

Try as I might, I have no intrinsic association between instruments and genders. None. Which makes it hard for me to add sexiness into the equation.

I kind of looked at the question like what makes a person look attractive (as in drawing in, welcoming). A smile is pretty gender neutral, but is much more welcoming than clinched teeth and a harsh glare.

Oh I agree. I also see no association between instruments and genders. I'm looking ('looking' being the operative word here) at instruments and the way they're played purely from the poin t of view of how much they add or subtract from the player's attractiveness. And that does seem to make a difference when you consider the same instrument but a player of a different sex. For instance, at one end of the scale, a woman playing banjo appears kind of neutral in my book, whereas a man playing banjo appears kind of creepy. A man playing flute appears kind of neutral to me, whereas a woman playing flute is, like 'Wow!' A woman playing pipes appears kind of neutral to me, whereas I can immediately see the attraction of a piping man. Heck! I'd go for 'im mesel' if I were that way ...

Andrea does nothing special for me. I find her kind of bland and there is a slightly weary sensation experienced when considering her. I prefer the likes of Steph Geremia or Edel Fox, and these are the women whose attractiveness I encourage my friends to consider. :poke:

Interesting. I've obviously been too busy listening to the music to pay attention to the sexiness so far, but will try harder. I'm intrigued that you find flute playing sexy - I always thought that a proper embouchure contorts a face in a somewhat unflattering manner.

Oh - bass guitar. Very very sexy on either gender. It's that low-slung thing, and the way they pluck it very lazily, sensuously. But not the slap/thumb type thing (Level 42).

I did tell Martin Green of LAU - quite truthfully - that his accordion playing was the sexiest I'd ever seen. He immediately realised that I too play the squeezebox, obviously assuming that no sane person would otherwise combine the words 'sexy' and 'accordion'. He is not naturally a handsome man, but I stand by my statement. 'twas more about the passion than the looks though.

I don't know about sexy, but you and your pals do look very nice - very smart - behind your accordions, Anyanka. :D

Besides the instruments, would the type of music they're playing play a factor too? Are folk, blues, classic rock sexier than say classical or jazz? What about the ranking of jigs against reels or airs?

Pete Townshend had some subtle thoughts on this.

Squeeze Box by Pete Townshed

Mama's got a squeeze box
She wears on her chest
And when Daddy comes home
He never gets no rest

'Cause she's playing all night
And the music's all right
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night

Well the kids don't eat
And the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music
In the whole damn street

'Cause she's playing all night
And the music's all right
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night

She goes in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out

Cause' she's playing all night
And the music's all right
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night

She goes, squeeze me, come on and squeeze me
Come on and tease me like you do
I'm so in love with you
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night

She goes in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out

'Cause she's playing all night
And the music's all right
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night
