C major note when playing in D minor

Post by RonaldD »

Hello, I was playing notes in making a D minor tune on my B/C accordion
and realized that I was playing the C natural note just below the D as an intro note.
This C sounds really nice in D minor.
I am new to flutes, with the help of a key can that C natural below the D be played on the flute.
I just assumed that without a key it is not possible.
What I was playing was the D first octave, same as the low first octave D on the whistle.
Of course it would tantamount to the low D on the flute.
Such a beautiful note in D mionor.

Nope, I thought of that but specified Aeolian for the Bb assumed from the OP's D minor!

Ah. I've come across that before. In my understanding, the term 'minor' doesn't only include the scale known in some classical music circles as 'minor'. So, the only thing implied to me is the minor third at the bottom of the scale, and probably a diatonic mode (of one sort or another) for the rest of it.

Othanenn,
I usually wait till the post has no more responses so I can Thank everyone.
When you give Thanks to the first, second or third person that answers; some people sometimes will feel
that there are no more valuable answers to be given and will think that the post is no longer in need of their responses.
Perhaps I should do it your way and Thank everyone in advance....
I certainly did not mean to be uncouth or indifferent in anyway.
Thank You for your responses, especially you Othanenn for this particular post.

We're not? Hell, no wonder I'm not rich yet.

Ronald: Yes, if you start a question thread, you should take the time to respond before starting a new thread.

What people casually call "D minor" trad tunes are usually actually D Dorian, with C-nat as the leading tone. Which is why the C sounds good. And the lack of the low C on pipes, whistle, and many flutes is one of the reasons that DDor tunes are less common, or are transposed to EDor with access to the low D leading tone.

FWIW the difference between D aeolian/natural minor and dorian is the raised 6th in this case it means D aeolian has a Bb and dorian has a b natural. The dorian mode can be thought of as aeolian/natural minor with a raised 6th, or a major scale starting and ending on the second note of the scale in this case it would be the C scale starting on D. In order to play a low C on flute you need low C# and C keys as both holes need to be covered to produce the low C.

I don't even know how to transfer someones answer to my reply...
That makes absolute sense.
And I more than likely got overzealous in having too many questions about an instrument
that I am just learning.
