You beat me to the punch. I even know how to fix it in that odd situation when a right handed helix meets a left handed helix. Some people just unconsciously give the receiver a 360 degree rotation when they pick up or put down. Being OCD with with likely mild autism, I was born with mindfulness in the Buddhist sense. Most people seen asleep at the wheel to me.

They might not know that their left-handedness is what is the precipitating factor to their phone cords twistings. I find twisted phone cords unbearable. Now I'll be able to educate those folks around me to stop this. Sinistre makes even more sense now.

I read somewhere that human nature effects to twist the cord.
Under normal circumstances people pick up the receiver with their right hand (being right-handed) and then have to note something down, so transfer the receiver to their left hand. This make a twist. Left-handed people will do the same, but the other way around.
Once in a while you only need to lift the receiver and let it dangle. It will spin to untwist itself.

Inefficient people would do things that way. I pick up the phone with my left hand, even have it set on the left side of my cubicle at work, so that my right hand stays free.

Our phone cord is 25ft. long. Luckily the phone is close to the back door and the extension ladder that goes to the gutters on the second floor. If I had been thinking I would have put the phone by the third floor window.
