Finally received the flute this morning in Canberra Australia. Had a little toot before work - is easily the most
responsive flute I've played so far and the first keyed simple system one. Now I have fewer excuses for bad tunes!

Congratulations. I have a 6 keyed Watson flute as well and I have to say that it´s a wonderfull flute. You are going to enjoy it a lot. For sure Glen knows how to make responsive flutes producing a wonderful tone. And they are very confortable to hold, the weight is rather light.

I´m extremely satisfied with my 8 keyed flute by Glenn Watson, too. It has a WONDERFUL tone, excellent tuning and responsiveness.

So far so good. The keys are not very ergonomic, but they are probably historically
accurate. The Bb key (thumb operated) is particularly irritating. It would be nicer to
have between holes #2 and 3 as on a clarinet.

Keys are always a kind of controversial matter.
A lot of players, self tought most of them, use to start flute playing using a keyless flute and holding it in a not right way. This bad habit is a problem when the players move to a keyed model. This happened even to some of the best flute players, like McGoldrick, that has a customized flute with some of the keys modified in size or position.
Good luck with the keys, it´s a matter of time.
Regards.

I liked the keywork on a Watson flute I tried.

That's the terrible risk of buying second-hand - sometimes you need to wiggle your thumb a bit.

I have a leftie 6-key from Glenn and it fits my grasp perfectly. Not to mention it is a light but powerful tooter with perfect tuning in three octaves.
Never give up trying to eff the ineffable.

The Bb on my Watson seems a bit of a reach as well but I have nothing else to compare it to. The other keys seem to be just fine. The only other issue I have is that I played my keyless flute with the RH section rolled inward a bit and on a keyed flute it puts the long F key touch too close to the G# key touch. I think I'd have that problem on any keyed flute though.

Cheers,

Kirk

I think keys on the Watson, like other trad keyed flutes, are simply something you get used to.
I played a six key Watson once and liked the keys fine. Patience, as always.

Thanks guys; I've changed my grip and getting used to the Bb.
It doesn't come up that often, but I want to get full use of the
instrument and start playing some of those fiddle tunes on it.
