OT: What's Your Zodiac (Sun) Sign? Theory to be tested
Great stuff, Jerry. 'Panpsychism'
is the view that consciousness is
distributed throughout the universe,
it didn't arise as matter became
configured in more complex arrangements,
everything always was conscious.
There is something it's like
to be an electron. And we might
add that the universe is thinking,
and perhaps every particle in it,
is thinking, too.
This is thought to be a long-shot,
but there's no
way to rule out panpsychism a priori,
and some of your examples
are suggestive. Perhaps matter
is mind-like, perhaps the universe
will turn out to be a sort of mind.
But I would bet that
the mind won't be very much like
our minds, that the universe won't be a comfy and romantic place in which
our concerns matter terribly, and
that the mentalistic picture that
emerges won't underwrite divination.
The universe, if it is thinking,
isn't thinking that I will soon
meet an attractive redhead; nor will there be a reason to believe that my
destiny is written in the stars.
Pre-scientific 'theories' are
so human centered and simplistic
that I think it's unlikely that they will
be vindicated by any accurate
account of the physical universe,
including a mentalistic one.
Jim Mc, Chinese fortune cookies never
go wrong. You have to learn how to
interpret them correctly.
Nick, everybody agrees that
astrology works in France!
Of course, if there is hard
evidence correlating astrological
signs with outcomes in a striking
way, it mustn't be ignored. Best

But I think perhaps that is part of wisdom. Knowing that I cannot know all, understanding that I cannot understand all. If the Maker's creation was understandable would I not find the Maker something less than great, would I not consider myself equal with the Maker? It is a tribute then to His greatness when I find myself
more confused even at the very instant that I have gained insight."

Everyone knows that:
1. Boeing 747's are made by large explosions in junk yards.
2. Webster discovered the dictionary after a fire in his printing press.
and...
3. A giant ball of gas blew up and generated a planet with animals, plants, seasons & people posting on message boards and playing the pennywhistle. ("Intergalactic Fartz" is the name of my band.) Not to mention, MAD magazine, MTV and the mosquito.
Physics is a lie because it states that you cannot have order from chaos. (As also proven by this message board.) I guess that makes me a Draco, Vega rising.
A great big metaphysical hug to everyone,

nickt...I grew up, like any brainwashed child I suppose, with all the faith of anyone in what I was taught. But, after being allowed to think "out of the box" I became aware that there was so much more, and so much less, than what I thought was true.
So, in all fairness to my own sense of well being, I gave it a 2nd shot and spent about 10 years "unlearning," attempting to clean out even the residue, and get myself in an objective, unbiased frame of mind, then started all over, only this time with teeth.
One should never swallow before thoroughly chewing, and one should never attempt to get a child to chew solid material before he/she has cut wisdom teeth, or at least fully developed molars. I have unpleasant memories of "force feeding" of allurements, and wanting to vomit, but they never knew I slipped a lot of it under the table to the dog, and that's why I'm in as good a health today as I am, I think, and all the worse for the sign of the dog.
Unfortunately, as I began placing the same old stuff in the test tube, I developed a new attitude of "no fear" of hard question. Also, no denial of reality...reality being that evidence, or potential evidence contrary to ones understanding.
This time, I took the path less traveled.
New light, in light of scientific discovery, now has us understanding the genetic code so much better. Depending on the configuration of the elements, an animal, during initial formation, may either emerge with 2 legs, 4 legs, six legs, 8 legs, 100 legs, 3 toes, 5 toes, 6 fingers, etc., an abdomen between the head and tail, or any other configuration available to reality...reality being what is possible under the circumstances.
Two eyes...one is the eye of faith (impressions, hope, intuition, spiritual perceptions), the other is the eye of reason and logic...and it's only when you view the world through both eyes that you get depth perception, or understanding ("you see what I mean?") You can always sense when someone only sees the world through one eye, because they sound like they are either all logic, or all gobly-gook (faith, impressions, intuitions). There is a time to use just one or the other, and times to use both. If you leave me to guess, and I'm hard pressed to know, I might use my intuition, and I may be wrong. But if I'm given even the partial story, the evidence available, and the tools to determine...I may well be able to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle w/o using much guesswork at all, if any.
And that's why most religion, including astrology, is full of double standards, confusion, multiple interpretations, blind faith, wanting it both ways, instinct, divining. The future is part of reality, and so is the past. Science seeks to replace all the temptation of guess-work with actual seeing into the future or past, and at the risk of angering the spiritualists. The spiritualists have seen this coming, and at times seen it interfering with their business and profits (prophets?), so a last minute new age spiritual amalgam has emerged, in an attempt to stay "above" the inevitable...the eradication of "the craft" and crafty. Don't they always percieve themselves as "above" anyway...a false prop for the maintenance ego?
An attempt to amalgamate science and religion (astrology included), or picture reality as the theory of everything, is nothing but wishful thinking, a last ditch effort to preserve the craft, the superstitions of the blind and blinded, and to snooker an unsuspecting public one last time before the truck (truth) of science leaves it's permanent tracks. To disagree with the obvious inevitable only brings out that human quality so well used over time...self preservation, only this time--preservation of the spiritual wilderness.
And that wilderness is only a swamp that badly needs drained.

Ancient spitirualistic understanding would have us believe that we either were spoken into existence, or formed artistically from the dust of the ground, and shaped by the potter...depending on which chapter you buy into.I see order and wonder in everything. How come we all have one head, two arms, two legs if not? (As one of literally millions of examples).

OK I give up. Although it wasn't a filmbook on Dune. It was a small copy of the orange catholic bible given as a gift before the trip to Arrakis. So you only get half creditOn 2003-02-27 12:35, Martin Milner wrote:
Dr Yueh, Dune.
Yueh is instructing Paul Atreides on how to read a filmbook about Dune.
There’s a slight notch on the edge of the cover to mark the place.

P.S. Are you a Dune fan or did you cheat?
