Can You Eat With Chopsticks?

You folks seem more sophisticated than the general public. I'm just curious what our stats are. I'd also like to know when you learned to eat with chopsticks. Share as much as you want.

I don't know...just learned by doing it. Sometimes, after you've mastered chopsticks, if you go in a Thai or Japanese restaurant where they are available and eat with a fork instead, you feel like a caveman.

Chopsticks are better if they come to a point. Stubby ones are awkward.

Another good thing about chopsticks is they often come in paper wrappers. If you know how to write some stuff in Japanese, this is a good place to do it. On the wrappers. Then you leave them on the table to bewilder the busboy. THIS is pretentious. But eating with chopsticks isn't.

I like to sharpen the chopsticks on a belt-sander and get them really sharp. Then I stab the food on the plate. I wouldn't dream of trying to eat long-grain brown rice with chop sticks one grain at a time. You've got to have sticky rice for chopsticks, and I'm not a fan of sticky white rice.

I learned how to eat with chopsticks in college. I'm not even sure when my hometown got it's first Chinese restaurant. It sure wasn't when I lived there. My wife has taught all the kids she babysat how to eat with chopsticks. One of the kids won the chopstick eating contest on International Day at his school as he was the only kid in his entire school that could eat with chopsticks. And this was after Toyota built a plant nearby and he attended school with the executive's children. I guess they were real big into Americanization.

One of my uncle's is Issei, he and my aunt met, married, and lived in Chicago for several years when I was younger. My uncle did most of the cooking when they came up to visit and of course we all had to use chopsticks.

Authenticity be hanged. They have them at our local Thai place, and I like them.

I thought you used chopsticks to eat soup in Thailand? I find the way most Americans use a knife and fork to be confusing.

Guess most of the places that have Thai food in this area don't make it obvious if they have the things. I must admit that I prefer the actual function of the sticks when eating most salads better than fork, so when I stop at a place like Noodles I'll eat a Cesar salad with them.

From the poll
Yes, but rice is a bit of a challenge.
Kinda depends on the rice...

I was talking with a Thai about that. I was informed that chopsticks are pretty prevalent in Thai culture, now. No one even thinks about it.

I should have asked one more question. Does anyone think your pretentious because you do use chopsticks? If you're of Asian background, I guess this wouldn't pertain but then, does anyone expect you to magically know how to use chopsticks then?

My band teacher always said I had good chops and that I weren't bad with the sticks neither.
