Thanks! Any idea of the flute(s?) he's using? He changed from the R&R looking flute he played on his great flute album: http://celticgrooves.homestead.com/cg_g ... ie_up.html

I seem to remember Frankie admitting somewhere that he never actually used the flute he's holding on the album sleeve on that particular recording. It was used on the photo because it looked better !

Ahaha I knew it! Well, good to know. He certainly gets an amazing sound out of it on that album.

It's an F Flute he is using in "Hard Times"? it sounds Prattenesque to me, that would make a total of three F Pratten originals (eight key) that I'm aware, if so. (I've mentioned many times that they are great for song accompaniment).

Nice, Holmes!

Great sound from that F-flute!
And well played, of course!
Who made it?

Not totally sure - trying to watch fingerings against sound in the couple of bits where he's adequately in shot - does seem to be an F (playing along on my RC&Co 8-key F). Nice playing.

I'd love to see pics and hear clips of that Jem, is it post mounted?

Best regards

Yes, it's pillar mounted. I have posted pics in various places - this one and a few more on Facebook, also in this post in the Flute Lichen sticky taken when I first received it, before doing it up. I haven't uploaded any since overhauling it. Here's a clip on it on YT.

BTW, what's a reasonable sounding length (center of embouchure to end of bore) for an F flute to be playable at modern pitch?

This eight keyed Pratten original plays in tune when out 7-8mm and with that the measurement that Kevin is requesting is 477mm approx (within a mm or so) It is the lower one in this photograph;

I'm conscious that we are high-jacking this otherwise interesting thread, I'll open a thread on original F flutes........

Good idea, Norman. I've got stuff to contribute (later, when I get home) but agree this thread isn't the right place. For now, just a comment that there are very few 8-key F flutes out there!
