It's really easy to point out which is the worst sin, it's always what the other guy is up to. Not so easy pointing us the least deadly sin now is it?

Oops, I was trying to figure out which one was best.
Lust and greed are hopes and dreams,
but gluttony is fulfillment.

That's my point.mutepointe wrote:It's really easy to point out which is the worst sin, it's always what the other guy is up to. Not so easy pointing us the least deadly sin now is it?
All the others can make you do bad things, either by commission or omission.
To my way of thinking, greed is the key. Lust is a kind of greed, if it inclines you to harm others. Sloth is a kind of greed - being greedy for your own time. Avarice is a kind of greed - hard to define it any other way. Same with gluttony. Envy is along the same lines - being greedy for something that isn't yours.
Wrath is a misnomer. If you're going to castigate emotions, how about despair? There are plenty of things to get legitimately angry about, and that would not be a sin - even a muscular Christian would agree.
But pride? What does pride make you do that is wrong, a priori? I can see a case being made for self-conceit... ...maybe...
Nope. Pride sticks out like a sore thumb, once you look at it closely. It is there so that religious organisations can nail anyone who steps out of line.
In fact, the way I see it, most of the problems the human race suffers from amongst each other, is due to greedy characters.

I think lust is over rated as a sin
and I dont consider it an illness either.
(Lust is a must).
Your poll could not accomodate my stance.

Seems like greed, while admittedly can be negatively employed, combats complacency and stagnation and promote progress. Luxury items become necessities and discontent seeks improvement.

You seem to think that is a good thing.I.D.10-t wrote:Seems like greed, while admittedly can be negatively employed, combats complacency and stagnation and promote progress. Luxury items become necessities and discontent seeks improvement.

I can see that there are constructive and productive ways greed can manifest itself and destructive, shortsighted, unproductive ways it can show itself.

When greed makes you covet your neighbour's female slaves that's a bad thing. But if you use that greed to earn the income needed to buy your own slaves, that ain't so bad.I.D.10-t wrote:I can see that there are constructive and productive ways greed can manifest itself and destructive, shortsighted, unproductive ways it can show itself.

Best to automate the whole thing. Give'm adequate shelter and food and the next thing ya know they're wanting privileges and freedom. It's never enough.dwest wrote:When greed makes you covet your neighbour's female slaves that's a bad thing. I am leaning towards "Sloth" being the least serious. If a person doesn't have an enabler they have to meet their basic needs or die. What can go wrong subsisting?

Re: Some things are Over-rated. Pick your "Serious Illness Sin"
Good question!
I don't think any of those sins deserve to be Deadly. Or even Serious Illness (nice concept, though). Perhaps just Slight Queasyness. For one thing, all sins contain their own punishment - no need to add to that from the outside.
The least severe has got to be Sloth. If humans only worked a little harder at their sloth, the world wouldn't be as polluted and the dodo would still be with us. In Taoism, not doing anything is considered a virtue, as far as I understand (I couldn't be bothered to read the whole book).
