That was a tough practice!

Post by andre66 »

Trying to read music and play the simple bits i'm working on at the same time was very hard during practice today, but it will get better.
I've always wanted to be able to read music and play so i have decided to go this route rather than using tabs. I do plan on trying to play by ear as well. Looking forward to tomorrow's practice.

Yes, it WILL get better. With time, you may be able to look at a tune and recognize it as one you know or if it's a tune new to you, be able to get at least a general idea of how it sounds.

I like your optimism, Andre!
In time you will be able to listen to a song or tune you love enough times, then "finger it out" without any written music. After a while longer, you will be able to play it smoothly!
I am still amazed that I can do this myself.

One thing that may help, if you already haven't gotten one, is a fakebook. It's very helpful as a reference to playing many songs without being so intimidating.

Dumb question here, but why is it called a "fake book" ?
Is it somehow different than other music books??

Because it allows you to "fake" any tune in the book for a gig, even if you don't know it. The format is lead lines and chords, which you're expected to transpose as required.

Back in the day, genuine fake books were rare, very expensive, and highly illegal (copyright violation). They were circulated mostly to members of the musicians' unions, and only if you knew the right contact in some dark alley. Then in the 80s various publishers came out with "real books" - fake books with copyright permissions - and the cachet lessened. But genuine fake books are still out there.

This particular book seems to be focused more on Celtic songs rather than instrumental tunes. Am I correct?
