Most Demeaning Flute Video of all time

Post by crookedtune »

Can anyone top this?

Ironically, I'm a fan of Alan Wilson and Canned Heat. Interesting technique, there, Bob!

Have you ever heard National Lampoon's "Lemmings" album. They get through about two bars of this song and then you hear a gunshot and the music stops.

Due to the uproar of the fan base to the
obvious lip-synching folly, this was filmed
to set right their credibility:

Guitarist Henry Vestine was also a world class
pepsi bottle player of the highest order.
I just love when bands do this on shows
where they just don't belong.

Thanks for posting this. As a beginner I really learned a lot.

Usually, when I try to play along with one of my Harry Bradley CD's, I usually don't sound very good and have a very hard time keeping up with him. But a simple thing I learned in the video was blowing on the end of the flute instead of over the embouchure hole. I tried that and I sound just like Harry Bradley. In fact, I can't even hear the difference.

Tonight, I am going to try playing with both hands on the same side of the flute like the guy was doing in the video. I've heard of the classic grip and the piper's grip, but you guys never told me about that grip. I wish I had seen this video much sooner in my flute career.

...now that I think about it, there was a program on the (UK) telly back in the early 80's (?) where the bands playing on 'top of the pops' lipsynced and instrument-synced to their chart hit, meanwhile (unknowing to them) they were live and being recorded. They couldn't hear themselves as that was not fed onto set, but they were shown the footage later and the sound was in most cases so awful (like the 'up country' clip) most bands took it all in jest and it made for some hilarious sounding tracks. I wonder if any of those are posted up on the tubey thing?

Thanks for the video crookedtune - great tune from 1968 - Bob "The Bear" Hite RIP was cool, as was poor Al "Blind Owl" Wilson RIP who was found dead in his sleeping bag a couple of years later. The flute player on the track was the great session musician Jim Horn who also played on Good vibrations and River deep, mountain high back in the day.
I don't think the video is at all demeaning. It's obvious the lads were having a laugh on the German TV "pop music" shop. :) Rock on

Memories, memories! Stupid flute dubs aside (and boy, was that stupid!) I remember seeing Canned Heat at Mother's in Erdington back in the day. This was the summer of '68, the time when they were having their deserved hit with "On the Road Again". The week before, John Mayall had been there. Audience members who fainted in the heat were passed out of the music room by multiple arms, over the heads of those of us who were still standing. When Canned Heat turned up the following week, I'm not sure whether it was the sheer frightening sight of the array of 4X12 Marshall cabs through which Bob "Bear" Hite (he of the stupid flute game) was going to blast his guitar, but we had to start passing audience members who had fainted out over our heads before the band even came on stage!
Happy days.
