Re: So...
My sister used to say "Sew buttons on ice cream" which made no sense whatsoever, but it sure got your attention.Nanohedron wrote:Yeah, I remember that one. Always hated it.farmer wrote:When someone prefaced a sentence with so, My grandma used to retort "sew the buttons on your underwear".

We used to say "Hay is for horses, straw is cheaper, and grass is free!"MTGuru wrote:"Hay is for horses!"
Thanks MTGuru. I hadn't thought of that in many years.
My personal pet peeve is politicians here in Canada constantly reiterating the phrase "at the end of the day". Blah!

Re: So...
"Absolutely".....now there's another of my 'pet hates' ...
In this age of hurry/expediency/short cut/abreviations etc. ... I always have a grin when the aforesaid politititians and spokesmen/women use the word absolutely instead of a simple 'yes'......
Ab-so-lute-ly ...now,there's four syllables ! ...much quicker to just say yes innit ?

- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

So. Hey, at the end of the day I absolutely agree with all of the above.

Re: So...
This reminds me of a usage (here in the States, at least); some people of an age group about maybe 15 or so years younger than I would say, by way of fashionable response and assent, "No doubt". That one always seemed too odd to me, although technically there is nothing really wrong with it, for its meaning is easily "There is/can be/ought to be no doubt about it." In fact, that is what I would have said to convey the same meaning: "No doubt about it." To me there has always been a difference in meaning between the two-word and four-word phrases, until hearing the newer use.Innocent Bystander wrote:indubitably.
Prior to that, I have no recollection of "no doubt" as that kind of specific, assertive response; instead it was just a modifying element in a sentence with the meaning of "one may imagine". As a response it carried that meaning, too. Yet neither of these really means the other at all in any literal sense. All the same, the responsive assent "No doubt" sounded wrong when in fact it was actually the better literal use. The irony is that "no doubt" (in the way I am accustomed to it) always carries a conventionally understood touch of uncertainty with it. Go figure.
