Flute masters degree?

Post by Chiffed »

Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I missed you guys. Teaching has sucked the life out of me.

I'm going to get serious on my own music again, and I want to do do a masters, in music, in irish/celtic flute is possible.

Suggestions? I hear Limerick is nice this time of year...

Yeah there's Limerick and at least two others one being UCC (University College Cork) and DIT (Dublin Institute of Technology). I am a Bachelor student at DIT, its good enough, it is especially good for us fluters because Tom Doorley is the flute teacher and he is an excellent player and teacher; I have learned a whole lot studying with him. I don't know who is at Cork and Niall Keegan is at Limerick but I think there is another flute teacher there too.

I wish we had such degrees here ;/
I'm afraid I'll have to start learning Boehm if I really want to get any degree in Music.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I'm sure whatever type of flute you choose to play, it will be beautiful playing, just as I heard from you last summer, Trip-. Will you be in Drumshanbo again this year?

Thank you Ben for the good word!

I barely have any funds to leave the country this year.
I am though, planning to go to Brittany to pick up the Morvan I ordered :)

For sure I will get back to Ireland again someday.

You might try contacting Ben Power (bepoq) here on the board. Ben did a Masters at Limerick - musicology, not performance. But he's a fine trad fluter, and I'm positive he's familiar with the flute program there. We also know another friend who did the flute program very recently. He's not on the Chiff, but I could track him down.

Doesn't Kevin Crawford teach - at least sometimes - at Limerick? Seems like I heard that somewhere.

A ton of people pass through for seminars, etc. But I'm pretty sure Niall Keegan is the anchor of the flute program there.

Yep, Niall is the director of the masters program and various flute players teach masterclasses through the school year. While I was there (05/06) I studied with Kevin a couple times.

Majella Bartley also teach many of the flute players in Limerick. Very good player and teacher. I also had classes with Kevin and Veillon. A good opportunity to meet many different players.

Thanks. So many of my cohort take these cheesy 'weekender' degrees in management or education leadership. If I do a grad degree, I want to have some serious fun.
