tunes for children

Post by john »

I am interested in learning some tunes to play for my nephews and a friend's daughter. I'd like to know some simple tunes that a child could sing along to. They don't have to be irish tunes, just anything that's playable on the chanter. I'm thinking along the lines of nursery-rhymes, lullabies and bits of ditties, and maybe tunes that have words associated with them like 'bean phaidin' or 'will you come down to limerick?' although these might be a bit too complicated.

I always get a good response from the kids (and adults) in church with "Jesus Loves Me" and "Jesus loves the Little Children"

Polkas are good.

If you have drones, remember that sometimes the sound of the drones can frighten young children. So prepare your audience. :tomato:

The sound of drones frightens young children. What's funny about that?

Pop Goes the Weasel

Drones frightening children? Unusual, but I've seen it happen.

Tis very hard to tell what kids will like. My 11-year-old daughter liked Irish traditional music from the start and she's going to start button accordion this summer (she's played piano now for 5 or 6 years). She always liked the basic repertoire. My youngest 3-year-old daughter (exposed to the same tunes) likes stuff like "Video Killed the Radio Star" and sings it with all the words correct.

mine currently prefer the works of VanWassanaer, middle period Queen, selected Django Reinhardt tunes, and filmscores by Miklos Rosza. Oh, and Taylor Swift. :D

This is true..me mammy tells me that when I was 2 years old I loved Greensleeves and would go into a trance like ecstacy when I heard it...even today it has a certain unknown about it for me...maybe I wrote it in a previous incarnation....point is don't presume the child will just love any old crap just cos ye think it will.....
