OVER THE PONDISM?
OVER THE PONDISM?
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=81420&start=75
at page 6 of this topic someone talks about a "Twirlie" and at page 7 of the topic someone admits not knowing its meaning and thinks thats because its an "over the pondism' type expression meaning acroos the Atlantic.
I just wonder if it is even that and so I have devised this poll.
The topic is strictly about the word and nothing else, thanks.
Poll only lasts for 5 days. After then I will TRY to report my analysis.
Then it will sink probably by attrition.

Re: OVER THE PONDISM?
It appears to be a term specific to the UK because it relates to and is derived from a rule particular to UK policy.

And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

Twirlie... I think that is when you stick someone's head in a toilet and flush it. The end results are a nice twirlie sensation to the hair.
Or is that Swirly?

Guys, can we quell the research, speculations and explanations for the word here until the poll expires.
For obvious reasons? (like there is a poll on)
Thanks.

Re: OVER THE PONDISM?
I once asked a girl if I could give her a Twirlie and she punched me in the face.
Stealing ideas from one source is called plagiarism. Stealing from several is called research.

Re: OVER THE PONDISM?
I couldn't bear to read all of page 6 of the post and knew I wasn't going to make it through page 7 either. It's the "ie" on the end of Twirlie. Maybe it's the spelling.

Re: OVER THE PONDISM?
I'm not going to explain what the term is in deference to Talasiga's pernickety stipulation, but I would like to observe that S1m0n's linked definition is too narrow, and NOT linked to any policy, political or otherwise.s1m0n wrote:It appears to be a term specific to the UK because it relates to and is derived from a rule particular to UK policy.

I think you just wanted to use the word persnickety.

Re: OVER THE PONDISM?
Oh, no. This is payback. You don't get to change the rules now, since you've shown how you play the game elsewhere. Do not have the temerity to expect consideration upon request, for you have overdrawn your account, and that not as of yesterday, but long ago. So as they say, beggars can't be choosers. You can beg, plead, cry, throw a tantrum, call a lawyer, call the press, cajole, flatter, pout, stamp your foot, gather your skirts and flounce off in a snit; I don't care. Try it all. It might even be interesting.talasiga wrote:Guys, can we quell the research, speculations and explanations for the word here until the poll expires.

Anyway, I voted, so what does it matter?
You know that rather rude hand signal where the wrist turns the laterally-oriented hand and pointing index finger so that the revolution plane of the fingertip is perpendicular to you and outward-turning, in that rolling "Yeah, yeah...move it along, get to the point if you have one" gesture? Maybe that's a twirlie.

Re: OVER THE PONDISM?
I for one am waiting to hear redwolf's first hand experience recollections of swirlies. What's the thing on top of an ice cream cone called?

Re: OVER THE PONDISM?
"Twirlie" would be a noun. "Twirly" would be an adjective. Well, at least in Nanohedron's Guide to English Orthography.mutepointe wrote:I couldn't bear to read all of page 6 of the post and knew I wasn't going to make it through page 7 either. I think it's called ice cream. Oh, wait...on those soft-serve cones, right? I call it a curl. I suppose you could call it a curlie, because it's curly. See above.mutepointe wrote:What's the thing on top of an ice cream cone called?
