Glen Gould

Post by patsky »

I know I should not say anything but I have just discovered the "Goldberg Variations" by the Canadian pianist Glen Gould. Man!!! this is music at its absolute best. Glen is to Piano what Seamus Ennis is to pipes.

Enjoy,

A bit of an odd chap, however.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

IIRC, you also get ample humming and grunting to boot!

I should add that I do enjoy Gould's playing.

After all, he "was" Canadian.
I like Glen's youthful playing of the "Goldberg Variations", and so did the world.
His mature rendition of the same work is a little hard for me to listen to, however.
Making your own statement may be a good thing, but........

He seemed odd even among Canadians. I know it's difficult to believe.

Tell us something.: Long ago, I was told that I faked iTrad whistle work very well. I took that comment to heart. 20 years of private lessons - and many, many hours of rehearsal later - I certainly hope I have improved...

I would like to suggest 'A Romance on Three Legs' - a fine biography of Mr. Gould. You will learn as much about Steinway pianos as you do concerning Glenn...
Best.

I have a slightly different take. The later set is downright spooky --- like gazing into an abyss. And equally hard to resist.

I am so ignorant. I didn't even know there were two Gouldbergs. I love the one I have on CD, so that's probably an early one... must go and check.

Mine is a reissued double-CD, each set on a separate disk. Both are riveting, but I agree with Doug that the earlier one is easier listening, and it's the one I play more often.

I've mentioned it here before, but that opening Aria from the Goldbergs makes a smashingly good whistle tune. In a good key and everything.
Free score here:

Note that the Baroque ornaments are played differently than Celtic ones. The MIDI file that accompanies the free score does not give a good idea-- listen to a REAL recording. OTOH, you can play it with more Irish sounding ornaments to turn it into a terrific slow air. Wonderful thing to play in either event.
