Watson vs. Olwell

Post by Matt_Celta »

Hello guys! I'm not a very active member here, I know... but I was wondering about the difference between these two flutes. Both are great, but I see most fluters have an Olwell. It'd be great to know the pros and cons, maybe.

Thanks!

Choosing between Olwell and Watson is something like choosing between Daddy and Mum. Both absolutely great. Perhaps Olwell flutes has a more easy and powerfull D, he is a genius making emboucher holes that can really make a flute honk. But with the right technique you can get a strong tone from the Watson too.
The best flute that ever existed in the world is my Watson flute with an Olwell headjoint that I borrowed a friend for a while.
Maybe the disadventage of Olwells is the waiting list, but if you go for a keyless model I think the waiting time is not too bad.

And now let me write some words in Spanish: Yo conozco personalmente a Watson, es un tipo muy serio y da gusto tratar con él.

Debe sonar sola, no?

Just one month with my new eight keyed D flute from Watson. African blackwood and silver, wider rings as new standard (not shown in his web) and two custom ideas: fully lined head and tuneable cork without the little ball. EXCELLENT INSTRUMENT: VERY responsive (almost like a good whistle), air efficient, different tones from it with little work (very reedy, dark and fat tone and volume if you wish),...a very easy Rudall style flute to play. Though I have played other flutes with easier bottom key notes (Cnat & C#)...

One year wait and 2400 € (+ 150 € from custom work, I think).

I wish I´ve had this flute years before... It does exactly what I want.

No problemo, and what a coincidence. I just sent a deposit to Glenn for a six-key D flute. Now I just need to stay calm until late summer. :(

Cheers,

That's the same model I ordered some years ago, a six keyed marvellous flute that you will start to enjoy in the autumm and you will enjoy forever.
