CD Players ..Any difference in sound reproduction ?

Post by weedie »

Howdy Pardners,
In my quest for a 'warmer' sound from my CD collection ,I'm wondering if the brand /type of player makes any difference in the sound I'm hearing ..
As mentioned in a previous post,I've bought a valve/vacuum tube powered amplifier (an Encel Cosmos from 1960) and a pair of B&W DM 22 speakers (English made, from the 1970's) and the sound is SUPER !!!
As I type ,I'm listening to Jethro Tull's epic,Thick as a Brick...and I'm hearing things I never heard before :) ..who'd have thought :boggle: ..
So...to the final link in the chain...the CD player itself..
Would y'all have any opinions on whether any particular player would make any difference ? ..or does it all come from the amp and speakers ?
Thanks folks .....

I don't have any recommendation of a product to buy, but there are differences between players. How many samples, whether there are errors in reading (unlike computer data discs, audio CDs do not have error correction info), and even the method of connection (analog, digital) to the remainder of your equipment.

Maybe two of the reasons that you're hearing things that you've never heard before is that your not blasting the volume and the bass, like in your younger days. And the cloud of smoke dissipated.

I got one of my friends the Jethro Tull 1977 Tour Shirt for Christmas.

Hi weedie

What kind of cd player do you currently have?

You have a valve amp set up, which will give you a warm sound, so it might be better to add a more clinical player to the mix - something that will pull out every nuance of the recording.

My personal preference is Marantz cd players, although som of the newer Sony players give good performance for the money (at least here in the UK).

If I were to change my cd player, it would likely be to this one Marantz CD6003 review

G'day Davy,
The CD player is a Sharp DV SL 10 ..It plays DVD's and Mp3's as well....perhaps I should look into a designated CD player instead of a combination job..but,then again, the Sharp does sound good :-? ..
Thanks for the Marantz review......going for a look at that now

Hi weedie

If you are using a DVD player as a source unit, then maybe the Sony BDP-S370 blu-ray player review might suit as well, it will be half the price of the Marantz and is available in Australia (according to Sony Australia's website).

Nice one weedie

I have no doubts the the Mazantz will wipe the floor, sound wise, with the Sharp. One thing though, you will likely hear every detail in your recordings, now, including all the mistakes and recording faults.

Well.....I DO have the first moment organised Mute ... Instead of Irish Trad,I'm planning on a listen of something old,yet lush.
The song ' Look into the Sun' ....from Jethro Tulls' album Stand Up ...I reckon that should show the systems' true colours..
And as for the drinkies...... I dont drink wine,so it'll be a bottle of James Squire Golden Ale.... 'a premium ale with citrus overtones' ...so the publicity goes !
And I hope I dont hear too many 'things that should'nt be' there Davy :o
I look forward to hearing the rumble of the Postmans motorcycle in a day or so :)

I would have went with Rhapsody in Blue, Ginger Ale, and Toast with Marmalade. Then I would have played some Yes.
