Is anyone out there composing new tunes or are you all just re-inventing the wheel?

Boyd,

Below are a few tunes of mine in ABC format. If you don't have an ABC converter go to http://www.concertina.net and click on tune-o-tron.

Send me some of yours.

Enjoy!

Timmy

Thanks guys
I should learn how to write music...have written some pretty dire stuff...when I come up with the showstopper I'll get someone to transcribe it!!!

Latest one is a 3 part hornpipe...Niamh's hornpipe

starts

AG FADF ADFA DFAd A2GF EGBE EGBE EG 3efg efdB AFDF ADFA DFAd B2AG FdAd B2dB AGFE D2

errm hope that's somewhere near what I meant.
The 2nd part [not here] is a bit syncopated too, the 3rd is very syncopated...and I'm adding in triplets to it in various places ...and a few variations...so the tune is still maturing.
I wrote it 6 months ago for my 3rd daughter's birth.

by the way ...I sat beside a Stephen Cooper when I was at Primary School...he used to get real howlers of nosebleeds.
Haven't seen him in years..

Lovely tune, Carol. I write an occasional tune. Here's a link to one of them at the Cittens on Ice site. I'm playing bouzouki.

*argh* My server keeps failing when I try this sort of thing...
OK: I've composed about 16 tunes, and when I've made bold enuf to play them for others there's usually a positive response, which is gratifying.
That being said, I've come across the opinion that persons not born and raised in Ireland or Scotland have no business composing tunes to fit the Tradition because the realities of life there cannot be in one's marrow, so to speak. Frankly, I don't fully agree with this, but it did contribute leverage in my having put aside composing for about 2-3 years now, especially since the opinion in question came from a dreadnought of the Mpls trad scene who has mentored me off and on....so much for thinking for myself, eh? Opinions, anyone?
BTW, how does one go about copyrighting one's work? Maybe I'll just get off my butt and start building tunes again...

N, somewhat conflicted

P.S. -The dreadnought in question is a born American...

There are always people who will live your life for you if you let them.

If I should take a notion
Well I go right down and jump in the ocean
And it ain't nobody's business what I do
Nobody's business what I do

Absolutely right, SteveK. And quite probably the opinionated one doesn't have it in him to compose, and so...
Anyway, thanks for the input!

Anyone who has posted in this thread might be interested in visiting the web site of Devachan Music belonging to Mark Simos. there are various things at the site including Mark's thoughts about tunsmithing. Also some sound samples.

Great tunesmithing section; thanks for finding it, Steve! It drove home for me the valuable point of crafting tunes as an exercise as well as a pleasure. If I want to improve (and I do), exercise counts.

That said, it remains for me to shut down the computer, already. *assumes wry expression*

N, still here...

Well done guys, but why don't you record your tunes and put them on "clips and snips"
so all people can enjoy and play them.
I wouldn't mind playing or recording some of the tunes I found in this section.
All the best to all of you
Listen, play and have fun!
