A helpful article on Canon James Goodman, piper and music collector, who captured settings of the time and arguably saved more than a few tunes from being lost during the Famine emigration.

A documentary will air on TG4 Wednesday at 9:30; in the film, Mick O'Brien and Caoimhinh O'Raghallaigh will play some tunes from the Goodman collection in The Long Room of Trinity College, Dublin.

Just caught the tail end of the TG4 show by chance, and found this post when googling Canon Goodman. The programme looked fascinating, never heard of him before but I'd like to know more now.

Thanks for the information! Mick O'Brien played a set of tunes (a lullaby, a jig called The Cauliflower, and another jig called Kissing and Drinking) from Canon Goodman's collection when he was here at a tionol this fall. He mentioned how many of the transcriptions, while very simple, worked nicely on the pipes. Of course, just about anything would sit nicely with Mick's piping .... but anyway, it was gorgeous.

I'm so grateful for collectors (and preservers). Thanks again! I'll be after that, just to study on.

I'd put that tune (Kissing and Drinking) on my list to learn from that book. It's funny that Mick obviously has similar tastes! I mean, I like it for the title, as well as the actual tune.

There're loads of great tunes in the book. I've already started an informal "learn Goodman and O'Farrell tunes club" with friends from Boston. It's great fun!

A very nice documentary, thanks for the pointer!

Loved the bit about how the piper came to become a Protestant. And the bit about how they (barely) finally found the book with the lyrics!
