i was wondering if anyone could give me the english translation for these two irish jigs?:rogha mhaoir ui chathail and cathair na mi.

remember to keep your words as sweet and tasteful as possible,because you never know when you may have to eat them.

Sorry to see no-one responding. I know "rogha" means someone's choice or fancy, but I'm not too good at translating names - Mary O'Cahill's Fancy? The second one looks like My Town or a reference to the people therein. Where are you seeing these titles? Do you know if you are leaving out the diacritical marks over some letters?

Thanks for the reply. I found the tunes in a Feadog practice book. their nice little jigs,but I didn't know what the titles mean.

I agree with Dubhlinn.... you could call the tune "Orinda's Jig" if you like.

I'd go for Mayor O Cathal's Fancy and the City of Meath (of course there isn't one unless it refer's to Tara or one of the other early settlements along the Boyne)

Broadly in agreement, though O Cathail is presumably the name that is most commonly anglicised as "Cahill". Also I seem to recall that "maor" is sometimes used as the Irish word for Major (the military rank).

Rogha Maoir Uí Cathail is also known as Sargent Cahill’s Favorite.
Cathair Na Mí is also known as Cahiramee and as Hunt the Hare.
