Does anyone know who she was (or is, although that would make her over 100)?

That's pretty cool. What does Sail Og Rua mean, and how is it pronounced?

What does Sail Og Rua mean....
Young Red haired Sal(ly).
A highly detailed transcription of the air and description of the song's history and content, can be found in the late Brian O'Rourke's book Pale rainbow (if you can find a copy. It's well worth it, though, if you are into that sort of thing.).
It's a very wellknown song.

Cheers Gumby. I find languages fascinating, even though my attempts to learn various languages always ultimately fail.

There are plenty of recorded versions: Dolores Keane's is probably familiar to a lot of people, look for Josie Sheain Jeaic MacDonncha if you want to go the full sean nos.
