Ronan Browne/Caoimhin O Raghaille: Full Set RTE

Post by Wannabe-Piper »

Just wondering if anyone managed to tape this off the telly when it was on, as RTE don't have the programme available for viewing on their Website. Could someone possibly put the show up on Youtube?

Tell us something.: I'm here because I just wanted to change my location... but it turns out much more complicated than I thought. Do I already have the 100 required characters?

The way he pronounced his name when he visited here recently was "Kwiveen O' Reilly"

I cannot download this file, do I have to be a member of the site?
Any chance some tech-savvy person could upload it onto Youtube?

Tell us something.: Been a piper about 20 years (uilleann), flute on and off over the years, classical and trad. Played classical piano growing up, bought one recently for my daughter to take lessons on, and got right back into it, but this time playing Irish tunes (Pádraig O'Reilly is my current idol).

It's no wonder you're confused about how to pronounce his last name. The usual pronunciation of 'Raghallaigh' would be the same as 'Reilly' (in English orthography). (Irish spelling might look strange, but it's actually pretty consistent, so there's no ambiguity about how to pronounce it.) And yet, Caoimhin himself pronounces it Rahilly (as does presenter Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh in this segment). And he really, he's the final judge in such matters.

Not quite. Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh pronounces his name "kwee-veen oh-rye-allah." (Not "kuh-VEEN oh-reilly", as I've heard many Americans say it) I think "Oh Rye Allah" might actually be the name of Caoimhín's YouTube channel... The way you pronounce a person's name depends on the dialect of Irish that you speak. Thus, a speaker of Munster dialect would pronounce Ní Mhaonaigh as "ni (v)way-nig" while an Ulster dialect speaker would pronounce it "ni wee-nee." The pronunciation "oh-rye-allah" sounds a bit Connemara-ish to me (though I'm definitely no expert). As far as I know, Caoimhin grew up around Meath and/or Dublin, but maybe his family had Connemara roots or something...
