Recording of Michael Carney’s “The Village Grove”?

Post by dcurtin85 »

I’ve seen a couple references to this cylinder recording, and a 1990 issue of An Piobaire mentions a tape version: http://3.248.59.149/Data/PIOBAIRE/PIOB0304.PDF (page 12).

Probably a long shot, but does anyone have a digital version? I’d really love to hear it. In the meantime, I suppose learning the tune from the Piobaire transcription is the next best thing…

NPU should have it archived, although it's not online. Perhaps ask them?

I have copies Pat Mtichell supplied but they are still on cassette and no time right now to try find them, I am afraid.

I remember the initial copy, of a single playing, as very noisy and barely recognisable. A fuller copy was very noisy as well.

Come to think of it, Pat gave me cleaned up copies of a load of cylinders, I will see if it's among that lot. And in that case it would be a digital copy.

Thanks for taking a look, Mr. Gumby! And I hadn't thought to ask NPU about the archives -- I'll keep that in mind for this and other recordings.

Asking Emmett at NPU is probably your fasted road there.

I know I have it, but it will at its worst take a considerable effort finding it on the cassette tapes. I am at home now and have located the two CDs of cylinders, rough versions and digitally cleaned ones, that came from Mitchell. I can't remember exactly what's on them, all of the Touheys aside. My computer was knocked into disarray by a lightning strike a few weeks ago so I can't access the CDs right now but give it a week and I'll be up and running again. No promises though, busy times.

I found a copy that I must have downloaded at some point, although it was labeled 'the village green'. It may be slowed down, but that's how I got it. Hope the site works, let me know if there's a better place to upload

Fantastic, thanks chaos97!! Neat tune and I’m very happy to hear another example of his playing. (As an aside, I always get weird looks from my wife when listening to old cylinder recordings — she thinks they sound like something from a horror movie.)

And thanks again Mr.Gumby. I think I have what I need now, so please don’t feel obligated to dig through the CDs, but I do appreciate the offer.

The more I thought about it the more it made sense for me to include the other tracks I had in the folder as well. Enjoy!

And here's four 78(?) tracks he released, two with Morrison
