Extra Notes on Baritone Regulator

Post by Ceann Cromtha »

I've heard stories, e.g., regarding Padraig McGovern's set, etc. that an E note can be added to a baritone regulator. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, is it possible to add B and C notes to a baritone regulator?

Specifically the baritone? As opposed to lengthening the tenor to get an E on?

That’s what I was wondering. (The other option does seem to be more possible, though.)

If you look closely at his set with the Taylor folded bass reg. you can see the key just up from the pivot block of the standard D key on the baritone - that would have to be the additional 'E'.
So yeh, kind of squeezed in there, and one imagines that using it would require a pretty deft hand (he is).

Be interesting to identify the maker and have them comment.

I believe that set was made by the late great Victor Mullally.
It seems that it’s worth thinking about what you can gain by putting extra notes in different spots. An E at the far end of a tenor reg wouldn’t really get you any new chord possibilities, just that one note. When it’s on the Bari reg you can create a few new chords with surrounding notes. EG, EA being the easiest and most obvious, but with hands like Padraig’s you can also hit EB and EC. All useful chords.
I remember seeing a picture of Jerry O’Sullivan’s KQ set with an extra reg dedicated to just the E note. It has a long key that runs the full length of the tenor reg and sits just beside it, giving you all of those chords pretty readily.

At about 1:40 into this you can get a good look at the baritone regulator with the extra E key.
