In this photo, I'm curious to know how the maker "caps" off the top?
Is a round disc soldered onto the top?

Yes. Generally it's soldered on and then turned on lathe afterward to be flush with the tubing.

ya know, I'm thinking maybe I'll revert to a wooden cap rather than fiddle with soldering..

Do makers do anything other than hemp to keep it tight?
Are epoxies or other glues used?

I've seen cork being used to make a seal between the chanter and top.

No, I haven't seen cork on the top of the chanter top. I was referring to where the chanter top joins the chanter.
