Seamus Ennis’s Mystery Flaps

Post by FlaminGalah »

Sorry for the odd title, but it is the question!

So on videos of Ennis, I often thought I saw a bit of tape flapping about by his chanter stock, and thought nothing of it- bit of bodging for air tightness.

Then I saw this photo: https://www.rte.ie/archives/2015/0916/7 ... mus-ennis/

And it seems it’s actually a quite precisely made leather collar, tied with a thin leather string.

The question being- what on earth is the point of this? It’s obviously not for airtightness, and serves no purpose for fitting the bag cover. And I don’t think it’s decorative because it’s a bit, well, odd looking.

Any ideas?

It might be the falcon’s hood. No idea why he used it though.

No explanation why it was there but an explanation why he used it: Because his father designed the bag that way. He talked about he bag and the falcon hood one of the last times I saw him play and that was the reason he gave.
