Could this be a photo of Johnny Doran?

Post by Steampacket »

Discussing just now in the Facebook uilleann piping group if this could be a photo of Johnny Doran playing in Ennis during the 1920's? It looks like Johnny's Rowsome set, ladder bass drone slide, bas reg. and chanter caps, but Johnny would only have been 20 years old in 1927 and this looks like an older man. Prehaps the date estimate is wrong and it's the 1930's? I've only seen photos of Johnny with a cap or bare-headed, never with a fedora type hat. I think it may possibly be Tony Rainey who busked in Co. Clare during the 1930's. Although there is a pony and trap in the photo and Johnny was known to go to into town on his bike, or in a pony and trap.

Hat looks exactly the same as the famous photo of JD with Pat Cash - the latter being the Fedora wearer there....
