Paddy Hyland's pipes

Post by emmdee »

Hi there

Now, I'm giving serious consideration to getting myself on Paddy Hyland's waiting list for a full set. Does anyone on the forum play a set, know someone who plays a set, or has owned a set of his? If so, I'd love to know your experiences, get some finer details, maybe see some photos. Paddy seems like a right nice bloke on the phone, but the internet isn't exactly awash with photos of his pipes and the man himself doesn't have a website to trawl. I might be able to go and see him later this year if COVID gives it a rest, but it's been 11 years since I sold my pipes and I'll be coming back to them pretty cold...

I'm not too interested in "Such-and-such makes good pipes too" type of chat. A piper I know as a good judge of pipes gave me a couple of names - Cillian O'Briain and Paddy Hyland. Cillian isn't taking orders for the time being, and I'd be happy to stick with Paddy at least as far as going to meet him and maybe get a feel for his pipes in person.

Thanks, Seanie. I'm not on Facebook, so I hadn't seen that. Luckily, I've been able to view it now. Great stuff!

Hi Rory

It is a Hyland chanter. She got it 3 or so years ago as an alternative to her K&Q chanter.

Thanks Davy, hope you're keeping well and getting through all this lockdown stuff as well as is possible, fingers crossed you'll be back to the sessions sooner rather than later.

Hi emmdee

Doing as well as can be expected, boredom being the main drawback. Next time I see you I will have a rake of whistles for you to try out.

Rory

Getting the first dose next Tuesday, so some relief in lockdown. I have been living on eBay looking for deals  8 whistles arrived yesterday and a half set in B last week - I must have been the first uilleann savvy person to see it on eBay - gone in 60 seconds. :D.

Tell us something.: I only started learning to play the pipes at the beginning of this year and this forum looks very helpfull to me for dealing with common questions that arise during practice.
