“Tá agus Níl” is not a translation of “Yes and No”.
Sorry to be pedantic - especially as it's really OT.
BUT, “Tá agus Níl” is not a translation of “Yes and No”.
Example where it looks like it might be:
An bhfuil tú go maith? Tá (mé); Níl (mé): Are you well? Yes; No. (can leave out the “mé” for convenience). “Tá” and “Níl” looks like “Yes” and “No”, but purely because the question contains the verb “to be” in the present tense..
Example of question with another verb:
“An dtuigeann tú?” (Do you understand): Answer has to use the same verb: “Tuigim” or “Ní thuigim” is the only way of answering ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to this question (answering “Tá” would just get you a strange look).
And if the question with the verb “to be” is in a tense other than the present, we have to use the correct tense of the verb in the answer – in this case the verb “to be”:
An raibh tú go maith? Bhí (mé); Ní raibh mé: Were you well? Yes; No. Here again it would not make any sense to answer “Tá “ or “Níl”
Here endeth the lesson.

Lighten Up...Yes ye are being pedantic....and yes it is OT...and yes this is friggin boring...Did ye not read my last post?I said ye were technically right...Jesus wept man,ye don't have to go on and on.
In Ulster dialect Tá and Níl can be used, and is used....
An bhfuil Gaeilge agat? Can ye speak Irish?
Tá? Yes
Níl? No
end of.....
If ye re read my last post (which ye obviously havnae) ye will see that I quite clearly wrote""Ye must listen to the question and use the same verb in your answer" which is what ye repeated in your posting above in a somewhat longer version than my wee sentence.....
There are only a handful of irregular verbs(11) but they are used quite frequently. The most commonly used is Tá.The negative of Tá is Níl.
Now,can I suggest we move on frae this item of minutae introduced by yourself to the thread,(which will be of no interest unless ye are learning Irish) and get some practice in or watch the test match
Slán Agat

ps I will be willing Australia to win the Ashes after the drubbing England got at the hands of Northern Ireland last night .That should do nicely.
Twas amusing to think tho, watching the game, the amount o "Loyalists"in the NI crowd baying for the defeat o their beloved England Tis a funny old world!!
Edited for grammar!!!
