found l. rowsomes

Post by woodshampoo »

I am in New Jersey for those who were wondering. Thanks to the gentleman who contacted me on the dunsire forums and told me about this site. Seeing as this forum is more uilleann pipe oriented it will be a great help.
The only person I have contacted to do the restoration was seth gallegher (a while back) and he didn't seem to want to do it. I know his pipes are in high demand so he probably doesn't have the time, though I will try him again. Anyway, thanks for the comments and info, hope to hear more. Cheers, all the best.

Thanks for the comments and info so far. I took some more photos in better lighting. I know the bagcover doesn't matter but it's nice to have the original piece that came with the pipes. The name on the reed box which it is addressed to in Montclair, NJ is the orignal owner, Dr. Raymond Wallace. I found them at his family's house sale. Also included was a set of miniature Robertson ivory parlour pipes, and a Henderson practice chanter.

So, beyond the incredible find this is, who is Dr. Wallace, I wonder, and how did his pipes become left behind like this?

woodshampoo - please check your PMs.

thanks,

Please stop posting pics. They are making me depressed. You probably got this set for like $50 or something. Lucky basmati.

At least it gives hope to those who love Leo's work that there are still sets out there to find. Be thankful someone who cares about pipes in general and who is willing to learn them found them instead of them ending up in someone's garage or worse yet, someone's home-instrument shop who doesn't know what the feck they're doing.

Yes, Definitely get a hold of David Quinn. He knows his Rowsome equipment. Also, you may try getting a hold of Michael Hubbert, he is an excellent instrument restorer.

I would certainly like to know what was paid for them at the house sale. I'm sure it was significantly lower than the actual value.

I'm also curious about the parlour pipes....are they solid ivory? Maybe you could post of few pics of those on the Non-uilleann forum...or give a link.

Either way, it's a significant find.

Please get these pipes to Benedict Koehler for restoration.

I also think it's safe enough to say that the original owner never really played them. They look brand new.

Congratulations!

Pat.

They look to be in terrific shape. Benedict Koehler is your man, and not too far away as luck would have it (and it seems there's plenty of that luck around you :) ) Congratulations, another set breathes again.

I wonder how much they will be worth when fully restored.

If you have to ask how much, you can't affoard them

Seriously though, the financial value is secondary to their heritage value.

I heard an interview with Neil Mulligan in which he mentions that a set of Rowsome pipes were presented by the government of Ireland to the government of Estonia in the 1930s. The set is held (not on display) in the National Museum in Tallinn.

Could be they don't need restoration, just a fine-tuning.
